Mystery DVD Club No 7: Haunted Honeymoon

The club unearths a gem for Mark as Messrs Wilder and DeLuise go all screwball in this horror comedy...

Has this been rigged? I don't think the Mystery DVD Club could have chosen a better disc to send me if it had tried. I adore Gene Wilder. His crazed performance in Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory remains a career highlight in what is my second favourite film of all time and I am always happy to sit down and watch his wild-eyed, curly-haired genius go to work. He isn't to everyone's taste, I know, but I'm a big fan of his expressive comedic turns.
Haunted Honeymoon is also written and directed by Wilder who plays the romantic lead to Gilda Radner and they are so believable as an on-screen couple because they were also married off screen at the time. The two were well-established comedic performers and this was to be Radner's final film, dying of cancer a few years after its release. Together with the late, great Dom DeLuise (who will always be synonymous with the Cannonball Run movies for me) they make for a strong core acting line-up. Throw in a fabulous turn from Jonathan Pryce - long before he almost sullied his good name by playing one of the worst Bond villains ever - and you already have the makings of a solid DVD purchase.
The plot is almost irrelevant as this is a film about big performances in a screwball comedy that harks back to films of the Fifties and Forties. For background, Wilder and Radner play Larry and Vickie, two radio comedy stars who are also due to get married. There is a problem, though. Larry is a little neurotic and is suffering odd moods filling him with fear. The only solution, according to his psychiatrist uncle, is to scare him out of his wits. Naturally, the best way to do this is for him to spend a weekend at his aunt's gothic mansion where his family is also in on the plan (perhaps with other, money-making motives in mind) and promise to help out with delivering some frights. However, a werewolf is on the loose and bringing some very real horror to proceedings.
The film essentially plays as a host of madcap skits and sketches loosely woven around the central plot and the fact that it works lies largely down to the quality of performances from the leads and the gusto with which all concerned go about their business. You can tell everyone is having a blast making the film and that, in turn, encourages you to carry on watching a film that flies by at a fair old rate.
Dom DeLuise in particular is clearly revelling in playing the role of Aunt Kate and while the sight of a man in drag isn't the funniest thing you'll ever see, it's still a joy to watch someone as great as DeLuise honing his craft as expertly as he does here. Indeed, the humour throughout the film isn't about big laughs as there are few to be had here. It is, however, a movie to smile and chuckle at and if you allow yourself to be immersed within the film's theatrical stylings you will be rewarded with a movie that harks back to the golden age of cinema while also celebrating the qualities of its leading men and women.
It's far from Wilder's best work and is all over the place, particularly towards the final act - with Radner ill, the story goes that Wilder was understandably worried about her, all the while taking on editing duties himself and I can't help but feel that it would have benefited from more outside influence in the edit suite - but if you're looking for an easy watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, this fits the bill nicely.
