McG talks Terminator 5

Simon Brew

Despite the commercial and critical response to Terminator Salvation, it's full steam ahead on Terminator 5, it seems...

Over at IESB, director McG has been talking to the site about his plans for the fifth Terminator movie, which show no signs of being disrupted by the underwhelming box office (in the US at least) and critical response for this summer’s Terminator Salvation.

McG, who’s also attached to a new big screen version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, has revealed that he’s already hard at work prepping a new Terminator sequel, even though it’s the former project that’s likely to take precedence.

Talking about the lack of downtime between projects, McG cited Michael Bay’s non-existent break between Transformers films, saying “it's terribly exciting to get back out there and show a different face of that idea, and perhaps get out of the apocalyptic world and into a contemporary world. I think the audience is going to be very excited about our way in”.

The director has also revealed that time travel elements are likely to play a part in Terminator 5, and that, according to IGN, the next film will be more of a chase movie than Salvation was. We suspect there'll be at least a three year wait before we see the next movie, however.

Going back to IESB, though, the site asked him how he felt about the fan criticism, and whether he took that much notice of it. McG, born Joseph McGinty Nichol, responded by saying “I listen to everything. It's interesting because a lot of people don't like me, but a lot of people just don't like my name. I can't take that too seriously because that's been my name my whole life. It's not something that I prescribed myself”.

There have, incidentally, also been rumours of a third Charlie’s Angels circling, which may or may not involve McG. Either way, the director has a very busy few years ahead of him...

What's with this generalisation of 'underwhelming critical response'? Both Empire and Total Film gave it four stars, and I personally thought it was a damn good movie

I really liked Salvation as well - to be honest when it comes to the Terminator world i'm more annoyed that the sarah conner chronicles got canceled!

I saw it right around the time it opened, and I thought it was...OK. I didnt hate it like some people, but it wasnt the same as T1 or T2. Granted, it was a notch above T3 in some areas. I think the main thing was, for fans of the Terminator series, this was something we had wanted to see for some time- the world after the war-not just in flashbacks, but an entire film. Granted, it would be extremely hard to match that future war sequence at the beginning of T2...and in many ways, I think that's what McG was working against. In the first Terminator film, we did get glimpses of the Future War throughout the film...the HK Tanks, the HK jet like vehicles, the human bases underground, etc...T2 took that up a notch and had marching Terminator T-800 endoskeletons with plasma rifles (one of Stan Winston's coolest shots ever)...McG had to somehow live up to the expectations of an entire FILM that was like those sequences, and I think that challenge was too overwhelming...He instead opted to make the story his own, and do soemthing people would not expect (showing a post-war world that still has rivers, still has trees, etc) ALso, having "mototerminators" etc also may have drawn snickers from some... Ultimately, McG had an extremely tough time living up to a series that was created, written, and directed by an extreme perfectionist (James Cameron)- I think McG did OK, but it didnt live up to all the expectations I had

I've yet to see Terminator Salvation. I'm not keen on the mention of time travel in the next film though. I think it should happen, certainly, but it should be an 'in development' thing, a small part of the film. The way McG speaks it will be integral to the plot! Possibly even more so than the previous films we've had (i.e. I've read somewhere about bypassing the 'no flesh' rule and hunter killers in the past, etc.) Still it's early days yet. TS changed from the first draft. This could change too.
