Director John Hughes dies, aged 59

The prolific and hugely successful writer/director dies of cardiac failure whilst on a family visit to New York...

Published on Aug 6, 2009

Film director, writer and producer John Hughes has died of a heart attack at the age of 59. Details are as sketchy as they could, be: the BBC reports that the director and screenwriter of such popular Hollywood comedies as Home Alone and The Breakfast Club died in New York of cardiac arrest while taking a morning walk. Hughes lived in Illinois, but was visiting family in the city.

We've been highlighting Hughes' career at Den Of Geek for the last few months, and a prolific career it was. As a director, Hughes helmed Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), Weird Science (1985), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Uncle Buck (1989), Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987), She's Having a Baby (1988), and Curly Sue (1991).

As a producer and screenwriter, Hughes was even more prolific, building his reputation and cachet up to become a major force in Hollywood. Aside from official screenplays (including the likes of European Vacation, Flubber and the Home Alone movies), Hughes wrote a great deal of work under the nom de plume Edmond Dantès (the principal character in Dumas' The Count Of Monte Cristo), including the Beethoven movies, Maid In Manhattan and Drillbit Taylor.

But the best way to remember the man is via his extraordinarily successful body of work. As you can see from the extensive links below, we've been celebrating Hughes in some detail this summer. What a shame it turned into a memorial this early...

What a sad day - the man who seems to have written all about my teens is now gone. RIP John. The Academy might not have appreciated you, but I always will!

The Breakfast Club & Pretty In Pink were two of my favourite films as a teenager and I still cherish them now. Weird Science & Ferris Bueller's Day Off & Planes Trains & Automobiles were great fun too! The truly awful Home Alone notwithstanding - JOhn Hughes was a great writer/director - 59 is too young to go.

Ferris Bueller was my first teen hero as a young kid. The man made family movies that teenagers actually wanted to watch. Uncle Buck is still one of my favourite films, and I even loved Home Alone - when it was first released. JH I salute you! May your name live on forever.

Uncle Buck and Home Alone are some of my childhood movie favourites. My thoughts go out to those closest to him - may he rest in peace. Thanks for the memories John!

I'm from the US, California specifically, and I think Den of Geek is a really great website...thanks to all you over in the UK that run this site! My teenage years were really influenced in a big way by the films of John Hughes. Mainly "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". Yes, I quote his other films, like "The Breakfast Club", "Sixteen candles", even "Weird Science"- I think that I saw almost every John Hughes film from 1983-1988 in the theatres, which is a testament to the admiration we had for his movies even back then. When a John Hughes movie was coming out, you would go to the movies and see it, ASAP!I'm sure there will be a debate as to what was his best film, or, if not "best", maybe his most "defining" film...I'm sure many will likely put "The Breakfast Club"..but, to me, Ferris Bueller's Day Off was the most influential of all his movies. It's one of my favorite films ever made, not just John Hughes's films, but just movies period. Very often, when people ask me what is my favorite movie, Ferris Bueller is the only non Sci-Fi movie that comes to mind...mixed with Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders, Aliens, etc...Ferris Bueller's Day Off shows up...It was a defining film for my own teenage years and the one that has stuck around the longest in my collective memory of the 80's. John Hughes's movies showed teenagers as being sophisticated, intelligent, and optimistic people who didnt just live to get drunk and cause problems. They lived in a very real teenage world of parents, teachers, principals, popular people, etc. The teens in his movies ACTED like teens and LOOKED like teens (especially in Sixteen Candles)... His movies were one of the biggest influences on my generation, and just a big influence on me in general. His movies would make people happy...almost all the John Hughes films were uplifting and positive...One of the most iconic being Ferris Bueller flying over the fence in slow motion to get home before his parents, while the music of the English Beat is playing- To me, that scene encapsulates the positive and upbeat influence he had on my generation. I am now 38, and I still have my copy of Ferris Bueller on VHS...That is still one of my all time favorite films. I feel like one of my best freinds from high school just passed away. Thanks to you all at Den of Geek for having respect for John Hughes and talking about his films. You guys have my respect for that.

How unbelievably sad it was to log on to DoG and see this headline. My sisters and I grew up watching all of his films and we still love them to this day. Seeing John Hughes' movies was kind of like a teen rite of passage for an entire generation of people. He will be missed!
