The Friday The 13th Ready Reckoner
Matt Edwards
It's Friday. It's the 13th. That can only mean one thing: it's Friday the 13th, time to watch some hack-and-slash Voorhees action!
Like many people, I feel duty bound to make time to watch some of the Friday the 13th movies when the day rolls around. The difficulty comes in choosing which ones.
Whilst they don't vary massively in quality, it's important to choose the right one to suit your occasion. I hope this goes some way towards helping you choose which different spin on the exact same story is right for you.
Friday the 13th
Original and best. Not the classic it's billed, but superior 80's slasher.
Friday the 13th Part 2
Dodgy follow up. Jason debuts at his most disturbing. Could've been worse.
Friday the 13th 3
Originally made in 3-D, now just looks odd. Hockey mask debuts.
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
Final chapter? Bollocks! Rubbish film, lots of nudity. Corey Feldman stars.
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
One of the worst. Bordering parody, twisty ending.
Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part 6
Well paced with a coherent story. Watchable nonsense.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Jason Vs Carrie. Never great but has some good kills.
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Jason on boat, characters you'd kill yourself. Silly but inoffensive.
Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday
Offensive. Lots of heart eating, Jason barely appears. Nice teaser ending.
Jason X
Jason in space. Death scenes look less painful than watching the film. Dumbest movie ever?
Freddy Vs Jason
Glossy wrestling match. No plot as such. Actually dumber than Jason X.

Re: The Friday The 13th Ready ReckonerUhhh... yeah, you're totally wrong on Jason X. Totally wrong. It's 3 stars at least.
Re: The Friday The 13th Ready ReckonerThat you would say Jason X is 3 star but take no issue with the rating for the first one would suggest you think Jason X is as good as Friday the 13th. I din't think we can go any further into argument if that's the case. Good day to you, sir.
Re: The Friday The 13th Ready Reckoner"Jason X" is by far the best of the series!

Re: The Friday The 13th Ready ReckonerAgreed on Jason X. 4 stars!
Re: The Friday The 13th Ready ReckonerIs this some elaborate prank and Jeremy Beadle is going to come out with a 'Beadles About' statue crammed into his little hand for me?
What happened to horror fans? I'm sure there was a time when people wouldn't have stood for a film like Jason X. The one where the little bug things turned him into RoboJason and he had a massive fist fight with that girl who was actually a terminator. That film? Or is there another Jason X I haven't seen? Because I'm starting to suspect you might all be really, really high.
Re: The Friday The 13th Ready ReckonerRobotJason is AWESOME. You like House of the Dead 2!!
Re: The Friday The 13th Ready Reckoner"Jason X" is great. It's got all the ingredients for top grade exploitation and it cooks 'em up in one big robopie that tastes great (even if it might not do you much good in the long run). It's awesome visual junk food.
You get robot tits, you get the highest body count of the series, you get bad space age fashion (and tons of perky teen girls wearing it), you get some really original deaths (the cryogenic head smashing is fantastic!), some nice self-referential gags (which bring a classic slasher series up to date with the post-slashers of the 90s) and a GIANT FUCKIN' ROBOT! :D I mean, c'mon, micro-scutters that meld Jason and his machete together to create ... that!? How can you knock it? I don't understand. This is wildly imaginative stuff. :)
It's not really a horror film, I grant you and it fails miserably if you expect it to be scary. It's more a sci-fi spoof with a ton of gore, but I love it. That said, if anything, I'd say it bears more in common with H.G. Lewis and the exploitation cycle of the late 60s, early 70s. There's nothing really offensive in there, but it just delivers ribald banter, bad one-liners, gore galore and a bit of nudity, with a totally unpretentious, playful approach.

Re: The Friday The 13th Ready ReckonerIt almost seems too easy to point out that you like House Of The Dead 1, but I think I'm going to. In fact, I think I have.
Re: The Friday The 13th Ready ReckonerFreddy vs. Jason was so terrible it made my eyes bleed.
Well, that isn't true but it is quite poor. |
