Alvin and the Chipmunks: have you no shame?

John Moore

Has 80s nostalgia finally gone too far? If they're seriously making a real film out of Alvin and the Chipmunks, the answer is surely YES YES YES. Stop the madness!

Published on Jul 12, 2007

Ladies and gentlemen. 'Here Comes Trouble'... indeed.

That sound you can hear is the faint gurgle of whatever semblence of cool Jason Lee once had - and in my books, any man who featured in a Spike Jonze/Sonic Youth video pulling skateboard stunts ranks as very cool - disappearing down the toilet.

This poster popped up on one of the animation sites I visit, research don'tchaknow, and - frankly - scared the willies out of me. Mighty Mouse, now that'd be great; Batfink even. Transformers? Definitely! But reviving Alvin & The Chipmunks... Who the hell gets nostalgic over Alvin and the bleedin' Chipmunks? And who under the age of 25 actually wants to hear a story about a falsetto rodent vocal trio - aren't the kids all busy trying to download Hostel Part II right now?

Well, I thought I'd share my pain with you all; it's got that whiff of Garfield about it, n'est-ce pas? (a film that even managed to put out an on-fire Bill Murray during his second coming) and whilst there's hardly been that kinda greatness from Mr. Lee, still, really, there's no need for this.

Look, I know Clerks II wasn't great... And obviously Smith can't always sort you out. But Jase, man, you used to be the shizzle. You should've been Bullseye instead of that cock Farrell; you may even have made a good Joker, come to think of it. Stop making bad choices like this, and there may still be some hope.

I dug up a press release about it from 2004. Maybe it will never actually turn up. *crosses fingers*

IMDB has it listed as "in production" with director Tim Hill attached - he of "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties"...

Heyheyhey. We all know this Alvin movie is a bad move, but thats no reason to start dissing Clerks 2. At all. It's brilliant. Plus. Jason Lee isn't only going to be doing this. season 3 of Earl and this nifty little kids comedy UNDERDOG.

Blimey they really are scraping the bottom of the 80s nostalgia barrel arent they - whats next 'The Racoons', 'Wuzzels', 'Go-Bots' 'Ghostbusters'..oh now theres an idea, why not bring back Ghostbusters as a TV show with a new cast.... hmmmm

The Ghostbusters should return, although Bill Murray has insisted that he'd only be in another one if his character was dead. Given modern CGI they could do a very cool Ghostbusters movie, I think. The one I'd love to seen done would be The Centurions, if anyone remembers that!

If you liked "Garfield," you'll love being hit in the balls!

A Centurians film would be cool too, I remember them, the show was on in three bits on a Saturday morning show called Get Fresh which meant you had to sit through nearly two hours of Gaz Top and that snotty alien thing to watch the entire thing. Centurians - Man and Machine...Power Extreme!

I'm sorry, but however cool My Name Is Earl and Underdog are, this wipes them out in a single blow. That's the point about Jason Lee... He's great, when he makes the right choices; unfortunately, he makes a lot of wrong ones.

That's a potential script winner there! The Italisizer With his faithful sidekick the Underliner, they fighting for Truth, Justice and the correct use of parenthesis! "We are number one. All others are number two, or lower"

The Centurions would be brilliant, The Italiciser even better.... Let's face it, they both have more potential than Alvin and the bleedin' Chipmunks. >_<
