Blade spin-off prequel trilogy definitely in development

Simon Brew

Stephen Dorff and Stephen Norrington look to bring the Blade mythology back to the big screen, in the shape of a Deacon Frost spin-off…

Published on Jul 7, 2009

It took a long time, in the aftermath of League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, to get Stephen Norrington back behind a movie camera. But now he's there, the lure of a new Blade trilogy could well keep him busy for some time.

Norrington directed the first film in the series (although I'd happily argue that it's Blade II that's marked the franchise's peak to date), and while he toys with a new version of The Crow, he's been talking to Comics2Film/Mania.com about a big screen Blade revival.

It was last year when Stephen Dorff first mentioned that a prequel, following the story of his character Deacon Frost, was potentially in the works. Stephen Norrington has now said that the new films have come out of Dorff's idea, and that, according to Comics2Film, the new film will be part of the existing mythology of the franchise, even if the link to Blade himself still has to be ironed out. Don't necessarily expect Wesley Snipes to feature.

Norrington is, if everything goes to plan, set to have The Crow out of the door by 2011 at the latest, and that's when he'd look to set up the new Blade movies. More news on ‘em as we get them...

Nah, I have to disagree, Blade 1 is by far the best of the series. Its got the best atmosphere, plot, and doesn't feature silly creatures made up just to have something more deadly than vampires. -wolfman

Gotta strongly disagree, Blade 2 was the weakest film by far. I really like Blade 1, I hated Blade 2 and I thought Blade 3 was better than 2 but still far behind the action, effects, story of 1. I'm looking forward to seeing Deacon Frost on the big screen again-he was probably Blades best enemy in the series so far so a prequel seems like a good idea.

you must be mad to think 3 was better 2... and I think this is a terrible idea, no wesley snipes... no film.

The dialogue in Blade 2 was rather cheesy. It was actually intended that way though as the director wanted to bring the film back to the comic roots. Despite the cheese and the dodgy dialogue (and that corny bit at the end where Whister throws Blade his sunglasses, dear me) it was my favourite of the three films. The Reavers (or Reapers, whatever they were called) were actually pretty scary, and there was a certain complexity to the main villain. I didn't dislike the third film though, although it would have been nice if Blade had more of a role. (I understand Snipes might be partly to blame for that though.) I think I prefer the alternate ending too.
