Brandon Routh’s Superman contract expires

Simon Brew

So who’s playing Superman now? Brandon Routh confirms he’s no longer under contract to play The Man Of Steel…

Published on Jul 6, 2009

Brandon Routh's future as The Man Of Steel has been thrown into doubt, as the actor has revealed that his contract to play Superman has now expired. In talking to the website Omelete as part of the promotion for the film Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, Routh admitted to the site that "I do not know of anything. I am sure that Warner Brothers is moving there, but everything is uncertain. Really, I do not know anything."

He then confirmed that "the term contract has expired. But if they call me, I would suit up without thinking twice about it."

With there being few fresh signs of movement on a Superman sequel, the expiry of Routh's contract may give Warner Bros a clear run at rebooting the whole franchise from scratch again. That said, in this instance, it may just be a case of if it wants Routh to reprise the role, it just offers him another contract anyway.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the story, and one that hints at just how much limbo the project is in, is that the contract was allowed to expire in the first place.

You can find the Omelete story here. You might need a good phrasebook to get the most out of it, though...

Yeah ! I'm totally all for rebooting entire franchise with none of this " let's stick the Man Of Tommorrow sixty years back in past, 1930s " retarded bullshit that's been going around ! I also don't want to see a dark and edgier francise ! I just want to see modern day Superman story/retread done right. No Bogart and Bacalls, no Batman, I just want to see best thing ever ! It's Superman, fucking do it :-)

And here's how I would want to see it, first two movies remake of first two Richard Donner movies. Third movie, with Braniac, possibly man the story that was rummored to of been already totally thought out before Richard Donner was pulled from the second movie as Director ( Lex Luthor, escapes from jail with plan he hopes will once and for all, finally destroy Superman. By using technology inside Fortress of Solitude he decides to build big huge giant robot suit of armour to face off Superman and to take over the world. Problem is before he able to finish it off, it becomes alive and turns into Braniac ... ). Fourth movie Doomsday. That's so what I would want to see dude ...

there is absolutly NO NEED to retell the origin. everyone knows it! i would start a new narrative, not following the Donenr films. but i would cast Routh in a heart beat. he was great in the part, and still has 10 years he can play the role.

This time, let Brandon Routh put his mark on the character, instead of forcing him into a Christopher Reeve impersonation. I loved Reeve, but let's face it, he's not Superman in these new movies, Routh it. After all, no one thought Christopher Reeve could pull it off either. Give Routh a chance, Warner Brothers!
