Looking ahead to Surrogates, plus new poster

Just beyond summer blockbuster season, Bruce Willis is headlining sci-fi thriller Surrogates. We look at what’s in store…

It's bizarre that another summer blockbuster season is coming to an end, seeing as it didn't seem that long ago that we were standing in a queue to see Star Trek. But when Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince arrives in two weeks' time, that's pretty much it for the major summer blockbuster releases.
However, poking our heads into September for a moment, there's still a treat around the corner. This writer has always had an admiration of director Jonathan Mostow. His Kurt Russell-headlined thriller Breakdown is a tight, taut and tense piece of work, and while U-571 bastardised history, it's still a strong piece of film making. And, shoot me, I quite liked what he did on Terminator 3, too, even though he was hampered for two acts for a decidedly unhelpful screenplay.
His new film then, Surrogates, arguably deserves a look, and not just for the presence of Bruce Willis in the starring role. We've already had a trailer for the film, which arguably gives far too much of the game away, but if you've missed that, Willis is playing an FBI agent here. In conjunction with his partner (in a professional sense) Radha Mitchell, he's tasked with investigating the murder of a college student. Said student has links to a man who invented the surrogates of the title, where people in the future are able to buy a flawless robot version of themselves.
These robots are remote controlled, allowing the owners to sit at home, while the surrogate goes out into the real world for them. But inevitably, things go wrong, and the onus switches to finding out just who is real, and who isn't.
Several things strike us about the film already. Firstly, you're going to see Brucie with the ropiest leading man haircut this side of Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard and Harrison Ford in Presumed Innocent. Secondly, it's a bold move putting a science fiction flick in the midst of September, And thirdly, could this be a potential gem hiding in the schedules?
Let's not forget the Mostow factor, too, who arguably more than any director in Hollywood, is awaiting the right material to really get some of the recognition he deserves. He's no Scorsese, but he's surely a damn sight better than he gets credit for.
But back to Surrogates. This writer, personally, doesn't care too much for the new poster that's just been released over at ComingSoon for the film (which you can see just up there), but is suitably pumped up with excitement for the movie. It's heading to cinemas at the end of September...
