Transformers 2 breaks $200m in five days

Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen makes even more money than expected…
Published on Jun 29, 2009
Okay, it’s fair to say that we knew that Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen would be big. And last week we were wondering whether its five day haul would break the $150m mark in the US, given that it got its Stateside release last Wednesday.
It did.
In fact, it did more than that. Because even though many were expecting Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen to do enormous business, it’s fair to say that the enormity of its take has taken some by surprise.
Estimates put the film at $201.2m after five days on release, which smashes aside Spider-Man 2’s $152.4m in the same timeframe. However, it didn’t quite manage to snare the five-day record, with The Dark Knight’s $203.8m take just tracking ahead of it. Interestingly, though, Transformers 2’s reviews have been brutal, certainly in contrast to the ecstatic reception The Dark Knight received, and yet it’s made not a jot of difference.
How well the film holds into its second week should be interesting, but with $363.2m in the bank already for the film worldwide, it should, in theory, break at least $400m at the US box office if it can keep this up.
We, er, still weren’t that keen, though. You can find our review here.
