Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen expected to smash box office records

Transformers 2 opens in the US, and the box office records are seemingly there to be broken…
Published on Jun 24, 2009
After opening to middling reviews in the UK last week - and our own wasn't too positive - Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen finally makes its bow onto US screens today. And the question appears to be not whether it'll be breaking box office records, but simply by how much.
There's little question that Transformers 2 will be posting the biggest opening of the year, with reports already suggested that the film's pre-sales were tracking ahead of every release this year to date. Furthermore, in a weekend devoid of competition for it, Transformers 2 has over 4,200 screens all to itself.
In its sights are the biggest five day opening ever in the US (with Spider-Man 2 the current record holder at $152.4m), and we wouldn't put off its chances of scoring the biggest opening day ever, either.
Interestingly though, Variety reports that it scored a massive UK opening last week, but couldn't quite topple the opening for The Dark Knight over here. That said, it also says that Transformers 2 is expected to pull in over $10m alone just from midnight shows.
That's the kind of change that Eddie Murphy movies have barely seen in total for a couple of years...
