Mark Wahlberg and Rupert Wyatt linked to The Gambler remake
A remake of the 1974 James Caan starring classic The Gambler has caught the interest of Mark Wahlberg and Rupert Wyatt.
Mark Wahlberg has supplemented his blockbuster output with some rather interesting smaller projects throughout his career, and it’s clear that the films he’s more passionate about are the ones where he’s instrumental in bringing them to the screen, last years Contraband being a good example of this.
The latest project that Wahlberg is circling is another remake, but again far from an obvious one. He’s looking to play the James Caan role in the remake of the rather excellent 1974 film The Gambler. It would be a solid role for Wahlberg and could be one of the nice remakes that draws attention to the original, bringing it a new audience in the process.
The updated version is based on a script by William Monahan who of course wrote The Departed (which co-starred Wahlberg), and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is the lead candidate to direct.
This is certainly sounding promising. More news on the film when it’s available.
