Conan gets its director

Friday The 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes director to head up new Conan movie...

Published on Jun 12, 2009

The search for a director for the planned reboot/remake/re-imagining of Conan is finally complete. The film, which is set to be based around the original novels rather than trying to re-do the first two films in any way, had been linked with Brett Ratner at one point, and more recently Neil Marshall had found himself in the frame (although he's now firmly in line for Predators).

However, Variety has now confirmed that it's director Marcus Nispel who will be wielding the megaphone on the project. We don't think we're going out on a limb here to suggest that Nispel's resume isn't the most inspiring, given that he's thus far helmed the remakes of Friday The 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (along with Pathfinder too), but we wait and see if this turns out to be an inspired choice.

The film is set to start shooting in Europe later in the year.

Forgetting his crappy horror output, Pathfinder had some pretty good and violent sword combat so if the script is half-decent and the actor they pick (SOOOOO integral to getting Conan right) this could turn out OK. I won't hold my breath though- it would have to be pretty bloody good to beat the John Milius/Oliver Stone combo original.
