It’s been confirmed that a third Tomb Raider movie is now in the works, despite the commercial and critical shambles that was The Cradle Of Life, and it’s also been confirmed that its producers are looking for a brand new Lara Croft.

Angelina Jolie, of course, stepped into the clobber for the first two films, both of which in this writer’s view were class A stinkers. Given the scope for a potentially strong action adventure movie, there was nothing in the films we’ve seen so far that comes close enough to that. And arguably the best thing about them was Jolie, who made a fine Lara Croft.

But Hollywood is a cruel place. And while we suspect that Angelina Jolie hardly has a yearning to play the role again, the simple truth is that she’s not going to get a chance. The reason? Bizarelly, she’s too old. This is the same Angelina Jolie who, last time we checked (which was around five minutes ago), was 33 (34 on Thursday, if you want to be picky).

Producer Dan Lin has confirmed that they’ll be looking to cover the origin story of Lara Croft (sigh: can you spot the current reboot trend right there?), and that’s inevitably led to casting speculation. Megan Fox was linked with the role at one point, and she’s certainly got the kind of profile you’d imagine Lin and his team are looking for. But there’s also the possibility that they may look for a relative unknown this time round, and spend the few quid they save on a bit more marketing.

Either way, the project does seem to be slowly moving at last, although it’s nonetheless hard to get too excited about it right now.
