BBC confirms work started on Doctor Who movie

A script is in development for a new big screen adventure for Doctor Who…
Published on May 27, 2009
Just the other week, it was announced that Warner Bros had done a deal with ITV to bring Primeval to the big screen, in what's expected to be a Jurassic Park-rivalling summer blockbuster in a few years' time. But it left us thinking: what on earth happened to the possibility of a Doctor Who movie?
Over the past few years, we've been subjected to a series of rumours about the possibility of Who returning to the big screen, with Russell T Davies at various points said to be keen on penning a film version of the Time Lord's adventures. More recently, he was also said to have jetted over to Hollywood, with a Doctor Who movie possibly one item on his agenda.
However, it's taken the end of a BBC News post on David Tennant's forthcoming appearance in The Sarah Jane Adventures to confirm that work on a film has finally begun.
At the end of the BBC News piece, it drops the news that BBC Films has now confirmed that "a script is in development" for a big screen Doctor Who. Furthermore, it noted that "BBC entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba said there were no guarantees a film would be made and that, if the project went into full production, a release would be a long time away".
Personally, I like my Doctor Who on the small screen, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't get instantaneous geekbumps about the idea of a film. We suspect, however, that we might have to wait some time to here more on this one...
