BBC confirms work started on Doctor Who movie

A script is in development for a new big screen adventure for Doctor Who…

Published on May 27, 2009

Just the other week, it was announced that Warner Bros had done a deal with ITV to bring Primeval to the big screen, in what's expected to be a Jurassic Park-rivalling summer blockbuster in a few years' time. But it left us thinking: what on earth happened to the possibility of a Doctor Who movie?

Over the past few years, we've been subjected to a series of rumours about the possibility of Who returning to the big screen, with Russell T Davies at various points said to be keen on penning a film version of the Time Lord's adventures. More recently, he was also said to have jetted over to Hollywood, with a Doctor Who movie possibly one item on his agenda.

However, it's taken the end of a BBC News post on David Tennant's forthcoming appearance in The Sarah Jane Adventures to confirm that work on a film has finally begun.

At the end of the BBC News piece, it drops the news that BBC Films has now confirmed that "a script is in development" for a big screen Doctor Who. Furthermore, it noted that "BBC entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba said there were no guarantees a film would be made and that, if the project went into full production, a release would be a long time away".

Personally, I like my Doctor Who on the small screen, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't get instantaneous geekbumps about the idea of a film. We suspect, however, that we might have to wait some time to here more on this one...

If there were to be a Doctor Who movie then it would be the ideal place to tell the time war story with Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith. It's possibly the only venue you could pull these guys together in anyway. Might be a bit continuity heavy for casual viewers but there would probably be a way to bring the doctor's together without inducing a headache.

As a fan since the '70s, I'm actually hoping this doesn't happen. This wouldn't be like, back in the '70s, when they tried to do that movie with Tom Baker: at that time, he'd been the Doctor for a few years and obviously wasn't leaving anytime soon. But, today? A multi-Doctor movie would, IMO, be too confusing for Joe Public outside of the UK. And a single-Doctor story with David Tennant would be deeply unfair to Matt Smith. It's hard enough for a new Doctor to win over audiences without having his predecessor on the Big Screen (imagine if they'd done a movie with Christopher Eccleston during David Tennant's first years). That said, I might well revise my opinion if they were to do a movie with, say, just Paul McGann; but, even then, I think I'd still have some serious reservations.

Yeah, bt as long as it was GOOD, it could still be continuity heavy and work as a movie. Being tied firmly to a TV series' continuity didn't hurt the first X-FILES movie or STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. Or THE WRATH OF KHAN for another. I love that film and I've still never seen the episode "Space Seed".
