Mickey Rourke for Mona Lisa remake

Rourke's Wrestler-revived career sees him taking on a role that won awards for Bob Hoskins...
Published on May 15, 2009
Rope Of Silicon reports that Mickey Rourke, currently the object of plaudits for The Wrestler, is continuing to capitalise on the 'hot property' status that got him into Iron Man 2 by taking on a remake of Neil Jordan's 1986 low-life hit Mona Lisa.
Jordan's original featured Bob Hoskins as a low-rent chauffeur who falls in love with the high-rent hooker - played by Cathy Tyson - he is hired to ferry around. Despite featuring a truly terrifying supporting role from Michael Caine (as Hoskins' boss), it was the Roger Rabbit star who carried away a BAFTA award and best actor Oscar nomination for his performance.
Casino Royale's Bond-girl Eva Green - whose excellent turn in Franklyn is practically an audition for the part - is in negotiations for the Cathy Tyson role.
Wassup Rockers director Larry Clark takes the helm for the project.
Brit-Grit flicks have rarely fared-well in transition to US locales, so let's hope Mona Lisa V.2.0 fares better than Get Carter or The Italian Job in this respect.
I guess Jordan's The Crying Game is arguably immune from a remake due to the diffusion of its 'little surprise'. But then that didn't stop them remaking Sleuth...
