10 glouriously mis-spelt movies

Daniel Bettridge

You lucky basterds - why should you wait for Tarantino to unleash cinematic dyslexia on you when we have the goods right here…?

Published on May 12, 2009

Quentin Tarrantino’s latest offering, Inglourious Basterds, will premiere at The Cannes Film Festival in May before hitting cinemas later on this year, in what is one of the most deliberately mis-spelt movie titles of all time. Well, we assume it’s deliberate. There’s in fact every chance that the movie’s title could be less of a clever attempt to grab our attention, and more the result of an over-eager studio exec whose tubby digits accidentally released the typo-ridden title online.

Of course in this case, the “Basterds” in Tarrantino’s movie refers to the group of Jewish soldiers on which the film is based, but with notoriously dumpy digits and the instant cock-up enabling power of the World Wide Web, it’s small wonder that more movies haven’t entered cinemas with typo-ridden titles.

One false character here, a mis-spelt word there; the smallest of changes could have a huge impact on the film’s title and so too the type of film the audience expects. So for a bit of fun we’ve cast a glance into our crystal balls to come up with ten typo led classics that but for the slip of a finger could have changed cinema as we know it.

Stakes on a Plane
Samuel L. Jackson’s cult outing is transformed with reptiles replaced by royal flushes in this high drama poker film played out at 20 thousand feet. Sadly, Sam isn’t the best of losers. “That’s it! I have had it with these motherf*$£ing stakes, on this motherf*$£ing plane.”

The Thong
Hot stuff in the coldest region on earth. Kurt Russell’s team of scientists tackle more than just aliens in this tale of boredom, deprivation and men gone wild. Think Brokeback Mountain meets Alive and your mind's probably about to explode from the sheer horror of the mental imagery it’s conjuring.

Bad Buys
A timely look at the weekly shop starring sharp talking, sharp shooting financial experts played by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Whatcha gonna do when they come for you and your elaborate shopping habits? A must see for the financially-challenged film fan.

Ferris Bueller’s Lay Off
Another recession-fuelled flick. This sequel investigates the serious side of slacker-comedy, as the ever work-shy Ferris becomes the first casualty in his office re-shuffle. This moving drama is a parable for the loss of good old-fashioned hard work, serving as warning to the modern desk jockey, whose day is filled with USB powered gadgets, Twitter and endless hours on mousebreaker.

The Sith Sense
Bruce Willis is the master to Haley Joel Osment’s Padawan in this Sith instructional video. Expect evil ideology, force lightning and trachea-crushing entertainment from the get go.

The Flu
Science fiction horror will never be the same again. The mutated virus might provide less visual gore than Jeff Goldblum’s winged menace, but you should still be afraid, very afraid. Henry Cooper stars as the hero throwing well-placed jabs in the direction of the infamous influenza.

Post in Space
Post-apocalyptic mail still needs delivering, just ask Kevin Costner. Luckily unlike KC, Matt Le Blanc knows a good script when he sees one, which is evident in this space-race documentary that follows his galactic postal route. Thankfully the Robinsons’ Robot is on hand to offer assistance to our family of noobs, guiding them through cosmic post-codes and delivering well-timed warnings whenever a yappy dog is nearby.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Han
The Star Wars meets Star Trek face-off fans have dreamt of for decades. As it  turns out, Shatner was the man behind the mandalorian mask all along, and in this interdimensional throw-down, Han is released from his carbonite prison in order to exact his revenge on Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew.

The Green Mime
From the director of Shawshank Redemption, Tom Hanks shows that he didn’t leave drama school without picking something up, in this tear-jerking homage to performance art.

Sigh School Musical
America’s teens endlessly talk about their feelings in this emo-inspired musical. Zac Efron stars as an awkward teen whose black-dyed hair and eyeliner hides the insecure angst that can only be felt by the movie’s middle-class teenage audience. The movie is famed for its musical numbers, which include whiney lyrics and stylistic head-bowed shuffling from the star-studded cast.

Whilst mis-spelled greatness has kept us entertained, it appears it’s also become the latest meme for thousands of Twitter’s work-shy moviegoers. Have a look at some more fantastically funny film typos at #renamerepitch or add some of your own suggestions below.
