Ken Watanabe joins Godzilla as shooting begins
As filming gets underway in Vancouver, actor Ken Watanabe becomes a late signing for the Godzilla remake...
Within the next few days, a number of Hollywood's finest actors will be experiencing severe neck ache. This is because shooting has officially commenced on Gareth Edwards' Godzilla movie, which means that such familiar names as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche and Bryan Cranston will be pretending to look up at a colossal, city-flattening lizard for at least the next few months.
We recently heard that David Strathairn was among the late additions to the cast, and late yesterday, it emerged that Ken Watanabe had been signed up, too. One of Japan's finest actors, Watanabe's most recent English-language screen credit was Christopher Nolan's Inception. Let's hope his role in Godzilla is as meaty as his talent deserves.
With Edwards demonstrating his talent with 2010's excellent Monsters, and writer Frank Darabont in charge of a script rewrite, here's hoping that the latest US Godzilla film will surpass Roland Emmerich's disappointing 1998 effort - and for the latest reboot's sterling assembled cast, worth the bouts of severe neck ache.
Godzilla's currently due for release on the 16th May 2014.
