Is the 24 movie dead?

Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer in 24

The adventures of Jack Bauer may be over, as hopes for a 24 movie look slim...

The long-mooted plans to bring the TV show 24 to the big screen may well be over, according to the man who was potentially going to direct the once-planned movie. Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua had been linked to the 24 film, but as he promotes his upcoming White House under siege movie Olympus Has Fallen, he's revealed that the project may well be dead.

"Yeah, that's not happening", he told The Playlist. "I don't think it's gonna happen at all, definitely not with me". He added that "I met with Kiefer, Fox wanted to do it, it was a matter of his schedule before he went off to do his new show [Touch]".

Addressing the rumours that the breaking point was that Kiefer Sutherland didn't get that impressive an offer to reprise the role of Jack Bauer, on top of budgetary issues, Fuqua admitted that "I don't think he was able to get a proper agreement with Fox. The time just passed, and I went off to go to what I was doing".

Since then, little has been heard of a 24 movie, and it's hard to see it happening now. Perhaps the rumoured Die Hard/24 crossover, with Jack Bauer and John McClane side by side, might at least have had something to it. Although considering the state of the last Die Hard film, there's an argument that Die Hard might need 24, more than 24 needs Die Hard...

it's a shame as even with Kiefer's salary, the budget wouldn't be huge in relative terms compared to a modern blockbuster. It seems like such a no brainer in terms of return on investment for Fox especially as they could do with an action franchise with die hard...well...dying.

Still waiting for a Wild Wild West sequel....

I wouldn't rush to any judgements here, Fuqua is not giving us anything new we don't already know; it's true that Kiefer and FOX were unable to come to an agreement on budget and salary issues last March before time ran out for the movie to be prepped and shot before Kiefer had to return to filming 'Touch', after which Fuqua moved on to his current film, but Howard Gordon - the series' executive producer - stated last year that "everyone is on the same page now", indicating that those disagreements between star and studio had been ironed out, Gordon also stated that "the issue is now Kiefer's schedule", seemingly meaning that it was logistical problems holding up the film's production rather than monetary ones.

When 'Touch' is cancelled in May - and it will be - then we'll see if the rubber hits the road in regards the '24' movie... there's absolutely no reason not to do it, the script is finished and ready to go, and all it would need is a paltry $45m to do it justice.

Touch probably will get cancelled as its not getting reviewed anywhere, yet this season is alot better than the first. Nevermind guess it will free up the schedules for more reality TV
.

How would a '24' film even work??

The thing that was new and made it stand out from the rest was the whole '1 hr' real time aspect.

Can we expect this film to be 24 hrs long if it happens? Or will it be part 1 of 24?

Why don't they just kill the format and keep the character. Call it Jack Bower. Seriously...I should work in the movies.

I think if they called it Jack Bauer it would work even better ;-) or just BAUER. It sounds like one of those shows from Sweden!

yeah with the sequel 'Bauer Power'

Seriously I thought wild wild west was good but everyone hates it?

It will be set over a single 24-hour period but not in real-time, not only for obvious reasons but also because the film's story supposedly takes place in Prague, Belgrade, and London, and so there will be travel between destinations that will account for time but not necessarily all of it onscreen...

So basically, like a Die Hard film but with no McClaine?

The essence of 24 will only work on TV. This film should not be made.

I think Redemption was in real-time over the course of two hours, they could do that again?
