Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives: first-look clip
A new clip gives us our first brief look at Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn's revenge thriller, Only God Forgives...
It's less than 30 seconds long, and its quality isn't terribly good. But the clip below is still well worth your time, because it's our first moving-picture look at Nicolas Winding Refn's latest film, Only God Forgives.
His follow-up to 2011's Drive, it again stars Ryan Gosling, this time as a Thai boxing club owner and drug smuggler whose brother is killed by evil criminal underworld types. At the insistence of his mother (played by Kristen Scott-Thomas), Gosling's character seeks bloody vengeance.
The footage below (which looks like a second-generation VHS copy purchased from a car boot sale, unfortunately) demonstrates Winding Refn's usual capacity for lush cinematography and searing, abrupt violence. It's safe to say that this will not be a cheery film.
Gosling (who appears to be becoming a De Niro to Winding Refn's Scorsese) has described Only God Forgives' script as one of the strangest he's ever read - which, given that Winding Refn also co-wrote Valhalla Rising (one of the weirdest historical epics ever made), isn't too surprising.
There doesn't appear to be a UK release date for the movie yet, but we'll pass one along when we get it - along with some better quality clips and trailers, we hope.
