Oblivion: shiny new concept art

News Ryan Lambie 4 Dec 2012 - 07:23

Director Joseph Kosinski's forthcoming Tom Cruise-starring sci-fi movie Oblivion gets some new concept art, which you can see within...

At the moment, Joseph Kosinski's probably best known as the director behind the pretty yet narratively thin Tron: Legacy. It's just possible, though, that Oblivion could marry a great story with Kosinski's obvious flair for spectacular-looking sci-fi. Starring Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum Of Solace), it's about a veteran soldier battling aliens on a distant planet, only to have the entire nature of his mission thrown into question by the arrival of a mysterious stranger.

The cast is rounded out by Morgan Freeman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who put in a performance of Terminator-like ferocity in this year's fabulous Headhunters), Melissa Leo and Zoe Bell.  As for the film's visual style, the concept art below gives us some idea of what to expect - one or two pieces have been floating around on the web for some time, if memory serves, but most appear to be new. The images give us a glimpse into an expansive future world of greys and browns, and we're intrigued to see how these expansive shots will look on the big screen.

It's thought we'll see the first trailer for Oblivion in front of The Hobbit later this month, which means we'll enjoy some footage from both Kosinski's film and Guillermo del Toro's own sci-fi epic, Pacific Rim.

When that first Oblivion trailer appears online, we'll be sure to share it with you as soon as we can.

7th pic makes me think Stargate... Looking good though!

Looks like a PS3 game. Personally I much prefer pre-CGI SFX, they feel 'real'. To me CGI is like staring at a blank screen, my brain just switches off. This is possible because I am an ex-gamer - these are like the video cut-scenes between the gameplay.

New concept art? All of these pictures (along with some others) have been on the internet for months. I saved them to my computer ages ago. A bit slow, huh?

Remake Dune please...as a big budget trilogy....well a few of those concept shots do look a bit "Duney"

Has Cruise starred in a film that hasn't involved projectiles?

And don't say "Cocktail" you crazy geeks!I love ya - now get outa here!

Yeah, they were in the preview book that was given out at San Diego Comic-Con 2010. The Illustrated novel, which was to have these pics from Andre Wallin was eventually canceled.
