Alex Garland talks potential Dredd sequel
Whilst the US box office has hurt the chances of Dredd 2, writer Alex Garland has an interesting idea for it should it happen.
Sadly, Dredd has underperformed at the US box office, which no doubt will have an adverse effect on the likelihood of a Dredd 2 happening. Still, while publicising the movie, writer Alex Garland has been offering up his views on what kind of direction a possible sequel would take.
He said that, “From my point of view, the politics is a lot of what I wanted to get into. There's a lot of stuff that's implied in the first film that you could really explore a lot more in the second. Dredd is part of a police state. He's a fascist.”
He added: “The subversives are sometimes the enemy in the comic books – there's something really interesting about pro-democracy terrorists, where the bad guys are the people fighting for democracy. Of course, they're not bad guys, because you should be fighting for democracy. I would like to explore that.”
It would be interesting to see a sequel take the route where the title character, and indeed the protagonist, is essentially the villain of the piece. Here's hoping the international take of the film is enough to justify a sequel. It's little secret that there are plans afoot for a trilogy, after all...

Just shows how dumbed down cinema audiences are becoming. Everything has been reduced to being a soft-edged teen movie. Give people hard '18' or 'R-rated' movies and they're scared off. What a damn shame. I would've loved to have seen Dredd's world expanded a little.
I'm not sure how Judge Death would fit in to this more realistic approach. I could see it in the Stallone one but lets just all thanks Science that that isn't an option.
Such a shame as this was my pick for film of 2012.
Dredd was my favorite movie of the year by far! I hope word of mouth spreads and picks up box office sails, all I've heard from people is the movie is good or great. After I watched the movie I was hoping for a sequel
i havent seen the movie yet but from what ive heard its good and it deserves better. I think alot of people are underrating this movie. damn shame.
Dredd was very good and I would love to see a sequel. This one was very confined to a single location, so I'd love to see the universe fleshed out a little more.
The only way we'll see a 'Dredd' sequel is if either the film exceeds expectations in the remaining territories it has yet to open in, or it does gangbusters business on home release formats upon release... the latter is the likeliest option! And even if it does perform consistently strong on DVD and Blu-Ray, will there be enough theatrical distributors willing to sign up for a sequel to a film that essentially tanked at the box-office, and will too much time have passed by the time 'Dredd' has a recognizably sufficient cult following to make a potential sequel worthwhile...?
Having mulled it over the last twenty-four hours, I'm now totally at peace with the fact that this movie may be the only one we get, it's one heck of a gritty and uncompromising futuristic police procedural that has more in common with 'Dirty Harry' or 'The French Connection' (or even 'Narc' if you want a more recent release) - albeit in a fictional futuristic setting - than anything Marvel or DC has/ever will put out... and that more than anything gives it a unique character that will undoubtedly lead to it gaining a wide and devoted cult following as the years go on, and it's the films oft overlooked on their initial theatrical releases that ultimately endure and appreciate over time! A sequel would have been nice, but if not, don't lament the fact it didn't get one, just enjoy the film we have and let it go...
