Terminator: Salvation’s ending changes

Simon Brew

Have Internet leaks forced the team behind Terminator: Salvation to change the movie’s ending?

Published on Mar 24, 2009

ere's something we don't recall hearing of before. According to a report at Moviehole, the end of this summer's Terminator: Salvation movie has been changed from the originally scripted version, and the cause of this could have been an Internet leak.

It ties back into a leak that appeared on the website Ain't It Cool News, which appeared last June. To be fair, the ending that the site reported sounded really quite terrible, but what we didn't expect was that it would have such ramifications for the movie itself.

What's happened since, according to the Moviehole report, is that the entire third act of the film has been changed. It quotes a Warner Bros contact confirming that the film's ending had been changed "because of the internet leak. The ending doesn't resemble the previous one in any shape or form."

That, as it turns out, may not be a bad thing. But it's the first time we can ever recall where the ending of a major blockbuster movie has been completely altered as a result of something that was posted on the Internet. Apparently, Warner Bros was so incensed about the leak that it ordered the rewrites, and it may potentially come to thank whoever did spill the beans in the first place...

The film hits UK cinemas on 3 June 2009, but our friends in the US get it earlier, on 21 May.

The original AICN story is here.

And here’s the Moviehole report.

awesome. i remember reading this on AICN way back when. The big JC as a Terminator? No thanks, Jim Cameron would be rolling in his grave (thats in the future after James Cameron discovers time travel. hes going to do it.)

Maybe the leak just made them look at the script with fresh eyes, and doing so they realised it was a stinking pile of dog turds. So went away and rewrote it, using the excuse of well the ending was leaked....

I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't have a problem with the "original" ending. The notion that the idea of John Connor is bigger than the man himself was an interesting one, and I think I'd only have had a problem with it if he'd been souped ultra-terminator. Connor's brain in a knackered Terminator body would have made for some good soul searching.

Hmn. I've avoided AiCN for years now (it's basically Troll County, IMHO), so this is the first I've heard of all this. That said...I like this (apparently abandoned) ending. As PeaJay18 said, above, I like that the IDEA of J.C. is bigger than the man himself. (Kind of like the Dread Pirate Roberts, eh?)

I wouldn't be grateful of the leak causing changes yet, simply cos we dont know what the new ending is going to be... it could be a stinker (if they have had to radically change the 3rd act to keep the ending a surprise it could mean a very ill fitting 3rd act.)
