Nora Ephron: 1941-2012

Writer/director Nora Ephron, of Sleepless In Seattle, When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail fame, has died at the age of 71.

Some sad news came in overnight: the writer and director, Nora Ephron, has died. She was 71. Ephron had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2006, and her death came from pneumonia, a complication brought on by her condition.

Ephron's most famous successful work is probably the pair of romantic comedies she wrote and directed for Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, Sleepless In Seattle and You've Got Mail. For us, though, it's her screenplay to the brilliant When Harry Met Sally that remains her best and most memorable work. That remains some film, over 20 years since it was first released.

Ephron also wrote the likes of My Blue Heaven (based on the story of the late Henry Hill), Silkwood and Hanging Up, and directed other films such as Bewitched, Julie & Julia and Michael.

She's been one of the most successful female writers and directors of the past few decades, and our thoughts are with her family.

Very sad news. Slight correction, though, the film was actually called Julie and Julia.

Fixed, thank you.

Too sad. I saw When Harry Met Sally when it came out and I knew she was great then. I knew the way you know about a good melon.

Well that's the epitaph sorted then.

I really liked When Harry Met Sally, too! I was surprised by how much I liked it, and once again I am pleased to see my taste reflected on this site. I pretty much love you guys.
