Philip Seymour Hoffman scowls and Joaquin Phoenix wears a grey sweater in the new trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s forthcoming drama, The Master…

With movies such as Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood, writer and director Paul Thomas Anderson has forged a remarkable body of work, and his eye for detail and knack for wresting great performances from his actors will likely continue in his latest movie, The Master.

And what a list of actors Anderson has assembled: aside from Philip Seymour Hoffman in the lead, there’s Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Laura Dern, as well as Kevin J O’Connor, who we previously saw in There Will Be Blood.

Hoffman stars as Lancaster Dodd, an intellectual with a side-parting who emerges from the hell of World War II with the ambition of starting up his own religion. Phoenix co-stars as Dodd’s disciple with wide lapels.

The trailer hints at a great drama, full of 50s detail – all swooping cars as big as whales, and belts located just below mens’ nipples. As for the promo’s soundtrack, that’s the work of the St Winifred’s Primary School Orchestra, Ipswich*.

The Master’s out on the 12th October in the US, with a European date yet to be confirmed.
