Marvel increases the budget of Iron Man 3
After the massive success of The Avengers, Marvel stumps up more cash for the upcoming Iron Man 3...
Filming has begun on Iron Man 3, and it appears that the success of The Avengers will have an impact on the production. For starters, after all, it's the first Marvel movie post-Joss Whedon's massive hit. Iron Man 3 director Shane Black is thus charged with following that, and delivering the best Iron Man movie to date. No pressure, then.
But he's getting some extra help from Marvel. Off the back of the succes of The Avengers, Black's budget has been increased from an already sizeable $140m to $200m. Obviously all the important elements such as script should be in place given that shooting is underway, but the additional budget should enable Black to ensure that things such as the effects deliver in terms of spectacle. It might pay for some better sarnies on set, too.
We'll keep you posted as to how the production of Iron Man 3 is getting along...

Awesome. Don't blow it. All the Marvel films thus far have been superb
(Well.... Incredible Hulk was pretty decent).
Given his pay from The Avengers, that bump in budget is probably RDJ's salary increase. :)
it's baffling that they think more money is required. you can make plenty of good effects and hire stars for that money. the other ingredients--writers, set designers, cinematographers, editors, are all much less expensive but more important ingredients. it's more care required, not more money.
its dangerous raising the baseline cost of blockbusters to where 200+ is becoming standard. first of all, they need to be runaway successes to make money, and second there is a finite number of moviegoer dollars, so you can only have so many of those a year, and it is often to the detriment of any other films released in the same period. Sure the Avengers is a blackhole sucking up dollars, but other really expensive movies are tanking and it doesn't matter whether they are good or not, the finite dollars were spent on the avengers. This isn't the same business model as tentpole movies paying the way for little dramas and whatnot. It's a fairy tale notion that if you had three 200 million dollar movies making a half billion plus, then 30 of them will also make a half billion plus.
Looking at the sheer number of grossly expensive movies being released this summer, it seems inevitable that a great many of them will not be able to make a profit
It's Shane "Lethal Weapon" Black. If anyone can nail the tone for an action movie with comedy undertones like Iron Man, it's him.
The Extra $ was to add the Hulk.
I seriously hope we're going to see the Hulk in this. Stark and Banner did drive off together at the end of Avengers, after all. And I could picture them being good pals, they seemed to have a mutual respect of each other's genius.
2 questions: 1) Why is part 3 less expensive than the first two? 2) How do you add $60mil of movie to something you've just about to shoot? Didn't that backfire for King Kong?
It would make sense to have The Hulk show up. Stark offered Banner a job in 'candyland' after all. There was good chemistry between them and the enormous green rage machine would be a great foil for Iron Man. Plus in Shane Black you have a writer/director who knows how to deliver a high quality buddy action flick...
bring it on !!
I really dont care who gets paid what. Comic book flicks are a friggin priority
Stark and Banner were great together in The Avengers, but it's hard to imagine how Banner could appear in Iron Man 3 without being a big distraction. If Banner appears, the audience will be spending all of his scenes distracted, anticipating a Hulk appearance. Then, if The Other Guy *did* appear he'd overwhelm the movie; if he didn't transform then the audience might feel cheated.
Also, Kevin Feige has said that the characters' individual post-Avengers movies will largely be kept separate, and he's specifically mentioned that Iron Man 3's plot will include reasons why he can't just call on SHIELD and his teammates.
Agreed. I just let my fan-boy fantasies get the better of me -- thanks for bringing me back down to Earth!
