Confused Reviews: Clerks

Matt Edwards

Matt once again lends his unique reviewing approach to another film. And this time, it's Kevin Smith's Clerks...

Published on Mar 5, 2009

I’ll admit that I got a bit confused when reviewing Clerks, so this review might not be as accurate as some of my previous Confused Reviews. The film is in black and white as it is a period piece, set some time in the past.

Sir Dante of Quick Stop rides his horses into work after an emergency telegram from the boss. He opens up the convenience store where he works and makes a sign to hang up, as some local savages couldn’t work out what to do with chewing gum and so jammed it into the shutter lock, which I understand used to happen quite regularly in pre-historic times.

A brave knight strides in and complains that the video store next door has yet to open.

“Where is the video store clerk?” he demands.

“I’m noteth even supposed to be-eth here-th todayeth,” laments Sir Dante.

Then Sir Randall of Mischief wrangles in, showing Sir Dante two telegrams. The first tells of his ex-girlfriend's impending union with an Asian design major. The second is from his current girlfriend, a serving wench, telling him of her sexual past.

“She serviced 37 knights!” exclaims Sir Dante.

“In a row?” questions Sir Randall.

Outside, two local drug dealers rap and cause trouble in an old-fashioned way. Jay and Silent Bobeth introduce some passing ladies to Bobeths cousin Olaf. Olaf is a Russian knight who they coax into showing them his ‘bloody combat face’.

Inside the store, Sir Randall hangs about whilst Sir Dante tries to work.

“Did you ever notice that thing about Star Wars?” questions Sir Randall.

“No,” replies Sir Dante “for we are in the past. Star Wars will not be invented yet for a great many years.”

Sir Randall then entertains Sir Dante with his salsa shark Jaws impression. Sir Dante then welcomes the arrival of a knight, who has come to slay a dragon in the bathroom at the back of the store. They leave him to it and discuss the pop culture of the time, joking about Greek gods and the latest albums by the Osmonds.

Sir Randall prepares to return to the video store and lights a torch, the only way of getting light and warmth at the particular time that this film is set. He places the torch down for moment near a pile of hay, which was often just left lying about in the past.

“Ah, be careful,” whines Sir Dante. “If the store catches fire at any time in the next 11 years or so we’ll be forced to take jobs at a fast food restaurant, with hilarious consequences.”

“No time for love, Dr. Jones,” quips Sir Randall as he leaves the store.

Dante then deals with a variety of kooky customers. There’s a knight who comes in wearing full battle armour and tries to return some batteries that he bought for his walkman as they’re the wrong size. There’s a witch who claims she can see into the souls of any eggs that aren’t perfectly shaped. Then Jay and Silent Bobeth come in and steal as much as they can carry.

Sir Randall then returns with the fair Princess Caitlin, Dante’s ex-girlfriend, who is supposedly about to marry an Asian design major.

“Alas, doth it is not true-th. Noteth at alleth,” she tells him.

“Well, let’s go on a date then, seeings as though I’m noteth even supposed to be-eth here-th todayeth,” suggests Sir Dante.

He goes to change into some clean jeans and she goes into the bathroom. When Sir Dante returns he hears loud moaning coming from the bathroom. Caitlin emerges, sexually satisfied but confused to see Sir Dante.

“Why Sir Dante,” she says “Howeth couldeth you have beaten-eth me to the front of the store?”

“I didn’t. I wasn’t out there. Caitlin just fucked a dead dragon in the bathroom!”

Caitlin flips out and is burned as a witch. Sir Dante closes up the store and goes home, leaving Sir Randall watching a Blu-ray disc of some really extreme pornography involving three men, two women, a sandwich toaster and a teleporter.

All in all, I wouldn’t even give Clerks a bad rating in a joke review. 37 out of 37.

IDIOT! Claiming Clerks is a period piece because of it being black and white is obvious but wrong film school 101. Black and White is often used to portray a time that has past - but in this instance its because it was a self financed film, and you could argue it stylistically adds an aura on non-conformaty etc etc. Its quite blatantly not a period piece. oh wait, you were joking! HAHAHA you comedy god you! i hate this site more every day. I iwsh i wasnt obsessed with film news so i wouldnt waste my time with you. if its not ridiculously defended opinions, its appalling attempts at comedy. "i know whats going to make the entire world laugh! ill tamper with the script of Clerks to seem like its set back in t'day, then call it a review! WOOOOOOW! IM AMAZING!"

It is called 'Confused Reviews' for a reason Gudge. You should know what to expect by now!

I'm really glad that you are obsessed with film news. If you weren't on the computer so much you might see me sneaking out of your mum's bedroom on a Tuesday or Thursday. By the way, I borrowed a pair of your jeans, she said that would be okay.

Matt, great way to defend your excuse for a spoof review. Great way to show your insult skills by mentioning my mother - iv never heard anyone use that as a reply when they cant argue their points properly. Saying that, maybe i should accept the "your always on the computer" jibe because you are obviously a comic genius for this excuse of a ridiculous article. nice one to mention me "always on the computer" by the way. i read your stupid little spoof and replied to it with reasons why you are a no talent tool in my 10 minute morning break. so bravo, you have surpassed yourself again with your AWESOMENESS! nice one to keep up the integrity of your writing staff though by responding with childish nonsense. oh, by the way - i porked your mum. HAHAHAHAHAHA im so funny.

This was a fine piece which amused me greatly, as most of Matt's confused reviews do. Gudge, I don't see a lot of point in attacking a comic piece you didn't like, or attempting to say that its nature was in any way ambiguous. All it does is show a big mean streak, which is something we on the editorial team strive to keep away from Den Of Geek. It's easy to throw bile at something from a position of anonymity (and I'm guessing you also think it's fun). If you can't put up with the site without resorting to mean-spirited snipes, I'll personally be glad to see the back of you, and I speak as someone who values every reader. Matt was responding very much in kind to your comment. - Martin Anderson

Gudge clearly has his head lost up his own a** to waffle an unneccasary rant, if you don't like an article don't read it lol. Ain't it amazing how even in olden times, Clerks would still have been awesome...

Matt's confused reviews make me happy. They make me laugh and I am hoping that he continues to write more seeing as how he took a bit of a break from them....which made me sad. Grudge: you're a tool.

Im sorry, but personally i find it disrespectful to Kevin Smith. Also, how am i supposed to know the appalling quality of an article without reading it in the first hand? Id like to take the opportunity to say maybe i did go a little bit far, but almost everything i have read on this site recently other than the news (which i admit i do enjoy, hence coming back) has been of poor quality. This was my first 'confused review' and I was expecting some sort of review - even comedy. This was literally changing a few lines to sound Olde English. I suggest renaming the column to "Alternate Universe" or something, because its more accurate. Its hardly bile if im arguing my point by the way. Matt was equally (if not moreso) spiteful in his review as he launched a personal attack instead of mentioning any points I made. Also, from the "we are happy to see the back of you" stand point, one of your staff asked me last week about the possiblity of me writing my own Lost review to contrast your continuous Matthew Fox hating (which is really what has put me off your site). Finally, if you are only willing to see your own writers points of views, then I am happy to see the back of this website, as I will continue to use the superior aintitcool and empire. I still stand by the opinion this was a very poor attempt at comedy - both the article and the lazy "your mum" joke in response. Surely the the point of a website with comments is to challenge the author, rather than blindly agree and kiss ass?

ps. The names Gudge, not Grudge. My name is not some sort of self imposed monikor to express my outward hatred at life (or grudge). Its my surname.....

Surely the the point of a website with comments is to challenge the author, rather than blindly agree and kiss ass? No ass need be kissed; however the 'yawn: FAIL' brigade send me to sleep. If you have something a bit more lively to say about Lost , we will indeed be glad to put it up.

Wow. Angry comments there, chief. There's nothing wrong with displaying dislike for an article but did you have to do so in such a mean-spirited manner? I have a sneaky feeling that's what got Matt's back up, and rightly so. I've posted many an article on this website and while I'm happy to take criticism and listen to apposing views (all part of the rich tapestry of life) no-one likes to be slated in a downright rude manner, least of all creative types like writers. If you didn't think the piece was funny then that's fair enough, of course (some people find Two Pints of Lager... to be the funniest show on earth, I'd rather watch a cat mutilate a squirrel) but to personally attack a writer who hasn't set out to offend anybody is a little unnecessary, wouldn't you say? Personally, I quite like Matt's writing. He's offering something a bit different to the site's usual (and very good) mix of news, reviews and comment and he can obviously write very well. That you think differently is great and that you wish to add your comment would probably have been accepted more by both the other guys who have commented here, and the writer himself, had your argument been more constructive and less sarcastic.

after 24 hours to think about it, i would like to offer an apology. I wasnt having the best day (not that that is an excuse), and Clerks holds a soft spot in my heart and i felt an injustice had been served. I was in "Randall" mode, where my opinions (right or wrong) must be delivered in a stinging way. on a side note - whens the new Lost article due? Id like to rant a little.... another side note.... Matt - your mums still gay :-p

Aw... it's like a mini-soap opera reading all these comments back. Not Emmerdale-standard soap, obviously. More The Bold And The Beautiful.
