Tom Cruise attached to Van Helsing reboot
Tom Cruise adds to his busy work schedule with a new take on Van Helsing, with a script written by Kurtzman and Orci...
The 2004 Van Helsing, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Stephen Sommers wasn't a critical hit, so I don’t expect that this remake/reboot/re-whatever will face the same level of scorn that greets the majority of such projects these days, particularly given the promise the material has.
The new take on the material has been on the cards for quite some time with Guillermo del Toro linked, which is understandable given the nature of the material, and back then Tom Cruise was rumoured to be his choice for leading man so he must have been very interested given that he’s looking to produce and star in this new version.
Cruise seems a good fit for the material and having him on board will likely open up the potential for this to become a franchise which would certainly fit well and mean that we don’t get another film where the objective seemed to be “throw as much as we can at the screen and see what sticks.”
It’s also promising that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will be involved, as writer/producers, as this project forms part of a deal the duo and their production company have with Universal which wall also see them tacking The Mummy.
If done well, this could be a cracking blockbuster so we’ll keep our fingers crossed that this turns out to be the case.
