Warner Bros announces a LEGO movie

There’s good news and bad news, as Warner Bros confirms that it’s looking to make a LEGO movie…

Given the roaring success of the assorted LEGO-themed videogames (the latest, Harry Potter Years 5-7, is due shortly), it’s surprising that it’s taken so long for movie studios to wake up to the possibility of a full-on LEGO movie. Throw in the fact that LEGO remains one of the most awesome toys on the planet, and it seems to make sense.

As it happens, Warner Bros has been developing a LEGO project for a few years now, but only now has it decided to press ahead with a movie, which it’s working alongside Animal Logic (the people behind the animation for Legend Of The Guardians and Happy Feet) to produce. The film is expected in 2014.

That’s the good news. The bad news? Rather than committing to a full-on animated LEGO movie, Warner Bros is going down the increasingly-depressing route of mixing in live action and animated work. Sigh. Is it just us that’s tiring of these hybrids? That said, they seem to be a one-way ticket to the cashpoint for studios. The Smurfs, somehow, took over half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

We'll let you digest that for a minute.

Anyway, the idea here is that the world will be made up of LEGO, and will feature human actors in it. But we’d still rather they just committed to full-on animation here. Only they’re not doing so. Bah.

Variety has the full story here, and casting is set to start early next year.
