Martin McDonagh gets started on his first new film since In Bruges. And the cast he's locked down is mightily impressive...

The cast list for Seven Psychopaths, Martin McDonagh’s first film since In Bruges, looks to be taking shape, following Mickey Rourke bowing out and directing some, er, choice words at McDonagh earlier this week. Rourke’s direct replacement will be Woody Harrelson, and he joins a cast that includes Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken and Tom Waits, with Olga Kurylenko also in talks for a role.

The synopsis of the film is as follows;

From Oscar-winning writer and director Martin McDonagh comes a star-studded, blood-drenched, black comedy. Marty (Colin Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay Seven Psychopaths. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration.

Billy (Sam Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime. A religious man with a violent past.

Charlie (Harrelson) is the psychopathic gangster whose beloved dog, Billy and Hans have just stolen. Charlie’s unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn’t think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the theft. Marty is going to get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale.

Given McDonagh’s involvement, this was always going to be an interesting project. But add that cast and the intriguing set up into the mix, and our hopes are high. Very high.

The film has begun principal photography, and is scheduled for a 2012 release.
