There's a surprise first trailer for George Lucas' mysterious new movie, Red Tails. And we've got a release date, too...

It was back in February that we posed the question, on this very site, as to where on earth was Red Tails?

This is a film that was first announced back in 2005, and was set to focus on the African American World War II fighter pilots, and the prejudice that they had to face to fight for their country. These Tuskegee Airmen became known as the Red Tails, and George Lucas was working away on a script for the film, to tell a fictional story surrounding them.

Then it was announced, at the end of 2008, that The Wire alumnus, Anthony Hemingway, was set to direct the film, with principal photography ultimately wrapping in the first half of 2009.

But all was not well.

Believe the reports, and George Lucas wasn’t happy with Hemingway’s work, and reshoots were ordered, which Lucas took hands on control of, apparently. Still, we hadn’t actually heard much of the project for some time, and it had seemingly disappeared.

Well, until now.

For, out of the blue, a trailer for the film has been released, and it’s a  really impressive one. Say what you like about George Lucas, but visually, this looks quite, quite brilliant.

A glimpse at the end of the trailer also reveals the release date for the movie, 20th January 2012. Consider that one marked in our diaries right now. There aren't any credits at the end, mind. That means we can't get to see who gets director credit yet.

But for now, we recommend you watch the following...
