As promised, Kevin Smith has taken to the road with his new film, Red State. So how did the first screening of the tour go?

Over in the US, Kevin Smith has kicked off his Red State tour, which is seeing him taking his new horror film on a 15-date journey around the country, ahead of its full release on October 19th.

If you've not followed the Red State story thus far, a quick recap. Smith premiered the film, which stars John Goodman, Melissa Leo and Michael Parks, at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It'd been a struggle to put the funding together for the movie, but the film was shot and finished towards the end of last year.

Following the Sundance screening, Smith announced that he would be distributing the film himself, kicking off with the aforementioned tour, before sending the film to cinemas under the Smodcast Pictures banner towards the end of the year. This, he argued, was the smartest way to get the film's $4m budget back, which, given his subsequent explanations as to the way the distribution system works, isn't hard to disbelieve.

At the first date on his tour at Radio City, the film pulled in $161,590 in ticket sales alone, before you factor in the associated merchandise sales, too. Clearly there's rental of the venue to be taken into account, but that one event is putting six figures on the balance sheet straight away.

We weren't at the event, but the response to it seems to be positive, aided by the fact that Smith brought along some of the cast, too. Smith also re-asserted his decision to stop directing films after his next project, Hit Somebody. Interesting, he didn't rule out directing other projects, though. Could we see Smith tackle the stage, we wonder?

He certainly appears to have been on form when he stepped up to the microphone on Saturday night, and his tour continues for a while yet. You can find out more about it at

When Red State comes to the UK, incidentally, we'll be letting you know. Let's hope it doesn't take too long...
