Extended Incredible Hulk Trailer

The Hulk reboot machine releases new pics and extended CGI footage show Edward Norton's Hulk fighting Tim Roth's Abomination in the June block-shaker...

The Edward Norton reboot of Marvel’s muscliest franchise gears up again in a recently-released trailer which shows off the new CGI quite extensively. The new footage from The Incredible Hulk depicts Norton’s alter-ego facing off against Tim Roth’s Abomination character in an all out, car-flinging free-for-all in an American high street. The lighting is a bit moodier, and perhaps Louis Leterrier has learned to avoid daylight when featuring the big feller, from the much-criticised CGI in Ang Lee’s 2003 false-start with Eric Bana.

The Hulk’s face and physiognomy are fairly similar to the Ang Lee version, though it avoids the hint of Eric Bana and – since it doesn’t resemble a muscled-out Edward Norton either – one can only guess that Marvel Studios don’t necessarily want to find thmselves too locked to Edward Norton as Bruce Banner. Roth and Norton both created their own fight motion capture in realtime, which was then mapped onto the creature models.

Some new photos have been released as well (see below), featuring the green-eyed Hulk out reminiscent of the transformation in the Bixby/Ferrigno 1970s series, as well as a shot of Liv Tyler in plane-hanging peril and villain Tim Roth injecting some green muscle-making gunk into his neck.

The Incredible Hulk goes on release in the UK on June 13th.

There is no way this is going to come close to being as good as Ang Lee's film - this will be standard-issue, dumb superhero fayre. In what way was the second best Superhero movie of the last 10 years (and one I've watched many more times than Batman Begins, when I think about it) a false-start Martin? If the core of that movie had been the effects, I would have been a little unimpressed - but Ang Lee actually tried to make a real film, with y'know... feelings and characters you actually cared about and plot decisions you understood and weren't just necessary to get to the next set-piece. Therefore, the effects did their job, they suceeded in concentrating on the emotion of the Hulk, the internal conflict, the little bit of Banner that's still in there. Surely it's essential that the Hulk doesn't just decend back to 'and here's Lou Ferrigno braking some shit'. It needs the emotion and the little bit of humanity left in there to shine through in order to make any of the drama worthwhile. That's an underrated element of ILM's FX on the first movie - not to mention that most of their 'A' team was co-opted to Lucas for RotS at the time and they still managed to get a cracking movie out. On budget. Lee's movie was actually quite a nice family/psychological drama, except the central character's problems manifested themselves in the form of a BIG GREEN THING instead of crying, endless moaning or killing people. There is no justice in a world where you can call that film a false-start and Transformers makes over $300m. None at all.
