Evangeline Lilly chats about The Hobbit

Evangeline Lilly talks about her role in Peter Jackson's upcoming films of The Hobbit...

Published on Jan 26, 2012

Doing a bit of promotional work for the DVD and Blu-ray release of Real Steel, Evangeline Lilly has been nattering to Entertainment Weekly. And as part of the discussion, inevitably, talk turned to The Hobbit. Specifically, she's revealed a bit more about her character.

Lilly is playing a warrior elf in the movie, by the name of Tauriel. “She’s actually the head of the Elven guard”, reveals Lilly. “She’s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she’s lethal and deadly. You definitely wouldn’t want to be caught in a dark alley next to Tauriel.”

Lilly revealed that “she’s not in the first film very much. She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved.”

She also said that she’s done six months of shooting, “on and off”, for the films so far, and “I still have to go back for five more months of filming”.

We don't need female characters in Hobbit, if Tolkien didn't put them there. By the way, Den of Geek... Your Security Code sucks!!!

@imagestic 1 Nice to see that it isn't new characters who are a problem - it's new female characters. God forbit there be even one nasty woman - the horror! It's not like pretty much every single fucking film is overwhelmingly peopled by male characters...

@ imagestic, by your standard we don't need a film of The Hobbit, we already have the book. I take it you are using a royal "we" in this instance.

After the first three LOTR's movies I have faith in PJ & Co that whatever liberties they take with the source material will translate into a good film. The thing that interests me most is how they will make the overall 'tone' of the Hobbit consistent with what they've established in the first three films, since obviously the Hobbit is quite different in many ways.

so she's kind of like a cross between legolas and haldir, except a woman? this probably won't be too bad-- kind of like the head uruk in two towers, or gothmog in return of the king. they act more as a face to represent these huge armies, something for the audience to focus on. i remain cautiously optimistic.

Whilst I am sure purists will always be disgruntled by any changes to original plot and characters I for one am enthusiastic about the inclusion of additional female characters. Peter Jackson's original trilogy certainly did not suffer from the enlarged role of Arwen and I feel that the franchise is in safe hands. I might even go so far as to say that Jackson's previous tweaks have improved upon the original subject matter in my mind. For my part I would say that Tolkien's original text suffered greatly from pacing issues, and earlier editorial changes served only to increase my enjoyment of a story originally rather dry and at times positively dull. Whilst other Hollywood interpretations of classic works have certainly suffered from meddling executives I feel that the franchise is in safe hands going forward, with a team already proven to have a good track record. Can't wait for December!

Evangeline is hot. I like LOTR but I have a wide variety of tastes (entering Tough Mudder). and I think she will be an asset to the film!

@EdibleBrain - if its a franchise can I have one then? No, I can't because its not a frnachise. Sorry to pick on this, but I am sick of people calling things a frachise when they are not.

Ok, use intellectual property if it feels better.
