Official synopsis released for The Amazing Spider-Man

The new synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man confirms one or two things that most of us had pretty much suspected...

Published on Jan 25, 2012

We’re just under six months away from the release of Sony’s rebooting of the cinematic Spider-Man franchise, and it seems that the studio has sent the film’s stars, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, on a bit of a promotional tour for it already.

As part of that, a new synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man has been released to The Times Of India, and it reads thus:

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field).

Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets.

As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

So what do we learn from that? Nothing we didn’t already know, really. It’s been clear that The Lizard has been the villain for some time, and the inclusion of Oscorp appeared to have been revealed by some of the many set snaps that appeared online.

We’re expecting a new trailer in the weeks ahead, as Sony continues to push The Amazing Spider-Man. The film is out in July.

"Abandoned by his parents"??? I always thought Peter Parker was an orphan. And I'm not too keen on the sound of this "corporate conspiracy" plot either.

I would quite seriously have much preferred another (decent) sequel to the former Spiderman series, rather than throwing a brand-new "take" on the first episode into the fan-base face. I thought the 1st sequel, with Doc Octopus, was even better than the first film. The next sequel (with the "dark" Spiderman) was very poor and weak. If only the funding/talent for the brand-new picture had instead been channeled into making a superior 4th sequel to the original, it would have been a vastly better idea, I think. Any takers?

Im happy they are rebooting. the last trilogy went straight downhill after the first movie. But the whole conspiracy with his parents dissapearing? Im not expert on comic book canon, but arent we gettign away from the source material with this? Thats troubling. Not damning, but troubling.

Downhill after the first movie? Err, Spider-Man 2 is one of the best comic-book movies ever and I'm not the only person with that opinion.

Not saying it was a bad movie but I found the second one really boring. The only reason I stayed awake was for Alfred Molina's performance.

Got to agree, Molina was what saved that film. God knows how James Franco's an Oscar-nominee. They're not getting away from the source material with Amazing Spider-Man though, it's actually much closer - Richard and Mary Parker, Peter's parents, were secret agents working for SHIELD. The movie is touching on the Untold Tales of Spider-Man comic series from the '90s, but the marketing strategy's been a mixed bag of Sony trying to balance the buy-in from the Raimi trilogy audiences with a fresh, darker take. It's not been working very well so far, but hey, Sony muddled Spider-Man 3 by insisting Venom was in it instead of Vulture, so...

Actually, Stan Lee's & Marvel Comic's original exploration premised Peter Parker's mother and father were U. S. spies that were caught and killed. Doesn't matter though, because HOLLYWOOD always---always---changes everything. As far as the 'Reboot' thing goes; how many times has HOLLYWOOD retold, changed, then retold the story of 'Bruce Wayne'? No need to answer, it's a rhetorical question... GBJ
