How you can help save BBC Radio 6music and the Asian Network

James Hunt

The BBC has announced plans to close two of its radio outlets - 6music and the Asian Network. But you can help save them...

The BBC's recent proposals to shut down 6music and the Asian Network have left many people angry - and with good reason. But this is a site for geeks? Why should we care so much about it

Well, whether you're a geek about comics, sci-fi or music, you can appreciate the need for outlets that celebrate geekery in all its forms, and that cater to interests that the commercial sector would consider 'niche', whether that's people who love diverse music and intelligent banter, or the large population of British Asians who want their music and interests to be represented by the BBC.

6music, in particular, is the one place on the airwaves where presenters can get down and geeky about their love of music, new and old, in a way that actually shares it with the audience. Since it's part of the BBC, there's practically no commercial pressure on 6music, and indeed, the station does things no commercial station has ever seemed interested in.

Further still, the presence of DJs like Adam & Joe (who spent their 20s filling Channel Four with toy-based parodies of Star Wars) and Collins & Herring (whose podcasts are aimed squarely at an Internet-only audience) further affirms the special place 6music has in the hearts of geeks up and down the country. It isn't just for geeks - it's by geeks as well. And that's something we need to encourage. Allowing the BBC to close the station without a fight would give the impression that the geeks don't matter.

Luckily, the closure of 6music and the Asian Network isn't a foregone conclusion, at least, not yet. The proposals have been made, and handed to the BBC trust, the body which represents the license payers, and a consultation process has begun, which will last until the 25th of May. You have a voice, and you can use it.

How? Well, here are some suggestions:

1. E-mail your thoughts to the BBC. Be polite, articulate and passionate. Explain that the output of these stations, contrary to what has been suggested, is not covered by commercial channels. Explain that the quality is uniformly high. Explain that they entertain, inform and educate. Explain that these stations do everything that the BBC should be doing to justify the license fee.

You need to E-mail your thoughts to srconsultation@bbc.co.uk. Remember to download and attach the required Cover Note!

2. Fill in the consultation questionnaire at the BBC site. This covers all of the new proposals, but you'll have your chance to mention 6music and the Asian Network as well.

3. Once you've done this, encourage others to do the same. This is the only way the BBC will definitely hear what people say, and a massive response is what's needed. Use the Twitter hashtags #save6music #saveBBC6music and #saveBBCasiannetwork when discussing it!

There's still a chance these stations can be saved, and right now, you have the chance to take part in that. Don't stand by and watch it happen

I've written a fuller version of all the things you can do to help over on my blog. So, if you're looking for more information, you can find it there.

We love 6 music. Absolutely enjoy the company of the radio station when we do our sunday lunches, painting the walls... That's why we launched the website http://www.helpsave6music.com to start the Earmuff Campaign to have our voices heard that "we don't want to hear anything else". Please please take part and upload your photos with hands over ears in protest. Go to "the gallery" page to see what other people are doing. Tell as many people as possible. Together we can do it! http://www.helpsave6music.com/

I want to be careful how i ask this question because i'm aware this is a sensitive subject, but can anyone explain the national benefits of a radio station that is both staffed and marketed along racial lines?
