The Amazing Spider-Man 2 indefinitely postponed on Xbox One
The upcoming movie tie-in for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 won't be swinging onto Xbox One any time soon...
Here's an odd one, and news that isn't all that great for Xbox One fans. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is only a few weeks away from release, has been delayed indefinitely for Microsoft's console.
Activision confirmed the delay, which was originally believed to only affect specific regions, but it was noted on NeoGAF that all traces of the Xbox One edition of the game had been rather covertly removed from the international website, including Xbox One assets and pre-orders.
Confirmation was issued to trade magazine, MCV, with a statement from Activision.
“We want to inform you that we are revising our release plans for ASM2 on Xbox One. When and whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One is TBD.”
Interesting here is the mention of "whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One", which would indicate that the game isn't guaranteed to arrive for Xbox One. Activision is still keen to keep the hope alive, though, and also talked to Eurogamer, promising that an Xbox One release is being worked on.
“We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game on Xbox One,” Eurogamer was told. “Currently, the game will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and the PC on 2nd May, 2014 as previously announced.”
It's been theorised by some that the cancellation is due to Sony producing the movie (as noted on Gamers Honest Truth), but this doesn't really tally, as the game is still coming out on Xbox 360 and other platforms, which means exclusivity can be ruled out. So, does this point to some sort of development issues with the Xbox One? This would be strange, as both the Xbox One and PS4 are almost identical, with standard, off-the-shelf parts making up the units. Developing for both is far easier than the previous generation. Still, many developers have had issues getting the Xbox One port of titles to perform as well as the PS4, so it is possible.
Whatever the reason, we're betting that the Xbox One will get a version of the game at some point, the Xbox 360 release alone points to that, as it's unlikely that any legal issues would only rule out one Microsoft platform and not the other. Stay tuned.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, 3DS and PC on May 2.
