Sega mascot Sonic The Hedgehog is to get his first feature film, with Sony Pictures aiming for a 2018 release...

We might have expected that Sega would have something major planned for the 26th anniversary of its mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. Well, here's one pretty huge announcement: Sega and Sony are joining forces to make a "live-action and animation hybrid" feature film, which is due for release in 2018.

The news was confirmed by Sega president and CEO Hajime Satomi, who had the following to say:

"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic The Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved."

Little more is known about the production at this early stage, but with the film's release two years away, we're sure to hear plenty more soon. Meanwhile, we're still waiting to hear about the 25th anniversary game Sega appears to have planned. Only yestrerday, it tweeted a further hint that such a game is in the works, with the official Sonic account suggesting that French musician Madeon might be writing its music.

Sonic's had his fair share of bumps over the years (2014's Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric being one particular low-point), so maybe this year will see the blue blur back on form.
