"It's the new direction for Burnout, clearly: let's add some hassle."First things first. This is not a full review of Burnout Paradise. I’m working on that. Instead, it’s an early reaction to the fact that the menu system that held the game together has been dumped, in favour of you have to drive around Paradise City looking for something to do.

I really wanted to like this. Unlike you and Sarah, I have no sentimental attachment really to the previous Burnouts. I love playing them but was happy to hear they'd made some major changes.
But yeah. I played this for a few hours last night and really, REALLY can't get on with it. I feel I'm missing something fundamental but I thought the whole point of Burnout, as opposed to other racing games, was that it was mental and you broke stuff.
The races and "burning route" events seem to be map-based and, frankly, I suck with maps. The nice thing about Burnout is that it's a fairly obvious route - start to finish - and you concentrate on smashing shit up and doing mad stunts rather than finding your way.
I just don't understand it. The game has been incredibly well-received, by and large, and yet it goes against everything that made the series fun for me. I am all for progress and like the idea of the game developing and changing with each sequel but this doesn't make sense. :(
Free roaming is such a bizarre thing to add to the formula. The fun thing about free roaming in GTA/Saints Row etc is that you can basically do whatever you want; you can go into shops, get out and interact with pedestrians, advance the story, etc. In a game like Burnout where there's no story or interaction with the backdrops, it seems baffling.
I am very disappointed. :(

This makes me very sad. The whole "Wrecked!" thing is incredibly aggravating. I just want to smash things up!
