Grand Theft Auto 4: week one sales

Guess how many copies of Grand Theft Auto 4 were sold in the UK last week? Clue: it's more than 100...

It’s been a staggering week for the Grand Theft Auto franchise, with the decision to delay GTA4 vindicated – and then some – by some astonishingly high week one sales numbers.

We reported last week that the day one sales for the game had broken records, and now Chart-Track has revealed that in its first week on sale in the UK, the game sold 926,000 copies. That means that already it has outsold all but three of the games that were released last year, and it’s likely to topple those in due course as well.

Around two thirds of the copies were sold on the game’s launch day, and the number trounces the performance of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which ratcheted up sales of 677,000 in its maiden week (although it wasn’t a multi-format release at the time).

As for format split, of the 926,000 copies sold of GTA4 in that first seven days, the split has continued at 55% in favour of the Xbox 360 version, and 45% for the Playstation 3, entirely reflecting the launch day breakdown.

The game should have broken the one million sales in the UK mark by the time you read this, too. And off the back of all of this, it’s perhaps fair to conclude that Take 2 has quite a hit on its hands…
