BBC planning "multiple" Doctor Who videogames

Simon Brew

Doctor Who is heading to the land of videogaming, with the BBC looking at launching several games based around the Time Lord...

Let’s be blunt about this. If you’re searching for a good quality official Doctor Who computer game, you’re going to need better eyesight than we’ve got. The last tie-in game as Doctor Who Top Trumps from Eidos, which was as forgettable as it sounds (and that's certainly a darn sight better than BBC Multimedia's last effort), and in spite of the success of its revival of the series, the BBC seems to have little inclination to turn the Doctor into a videogame presence.

At least until now.

According to videogame trade magazine MCV, BBC Worldwide is now in talks with developers about a collection of new games based around Doctor Who.

Dave Anderson, head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide, told MCV, “We’re having a lot of interesting discussions for a variety of ideas around Doctor Who that are complementary to each rather than in competition with each other – boxed product console games, virtual worlds and other experiences."

Digging deeper, this seems to mean that not only are we getting Doctor Who videogames – with Nintendo being one of the platforms that the BBC is actively investigating – but also there will be casual titles for the likes of the iPhone too.

just as long as it is better that the absolutely dreadful Destiny of the Doctors - I still wake up screaming with guilt after charging a young boy £5 to buy it off me at a boot sale rather than paying him £100 to dispose of the waste...

Given the Doctor's refusal to use guns the only genre that I could see fitting would be something like a platformer or an adventure game. So unless Matt Smith starts arming himself (and he did fire a gun in the last trailer)we're not going to see a First Person Shooter!

Turning the wii-mote into a Sonic Screwdriver sounds like the most logical move since the lightsabre. I hope for some sort of exploration game, that has you investigating, sneaking and obviously running. There could even be minigames when it comes to unlocking stuff with the screwdriver.

I can't see the point, you'll just easily solve every problem with the sonic screwdriver ;)

"Sixth Doctor vs Third Doctor - Round One - FIGHT!" No? Ah, shame. It's a tricky license to do a videogame about. Perhaps something like Professor Layton? Solving puzzles and problems and action scenes based around escapes and evasion...

I've got it! The produce a tiny version of the Tardis' control panel and you have to hit various buttons as little pictures of Dalek and Cybermen float down the screen in time to the theme tune!

Destiny of the Doctors was a FAB game when you were 12! I trully adored it at the time. No idea what the BBC are going to make now though, I can hardly imagine a huge WoW type game. I think playing the doctor in anything will be a No-No.

Does anyone else recall the name of the Doctor Who computer game that was brought out in 1983 to coincide with the twentieth anniversary? It was designed for the BBC Micro and came out on tape. Ah, the technology!! ;o)

I think doing a DR Who videogame is a fantastic idea-just what I have been hoping for.It would have to be a indiana Jones type game, though.
