New Road Rash on the way?
Kickstarter may bring retro racing classic, Road Rash, back to life...
Gamers who were fondling their joypads back in the 90s may have very fond memories of Road Rash. This was a racing game with a difference, as it not only involved cross country motorbike races, but also a dose of fisticuffs.
As one of a pack of death wish-indulging petrol heads, players went on a tour of America's highways and byways, racing in a series of long and arduous events striving to finish ahead of the pack. Along the way you could race as a good guy or, if you so chose, could stir up trouble and punch, club and chain whip your foes off their bikes. Of course, they could do the same to you, and if you happened to be knocked off whilst the local po po were around, you'd be busted.
Arguably at its peak with Road Rash II, the series visited a wide range of platforms and spawned a series of releases, but after Road Rash 64 on the N64 in 1999, it's been sitting in the garage rusting away.
That might not be the case for long, though, as series co-designer, Dan Geisler, has posted on Reddit that the series may be on its way back, via Kickstarter.
In the post, which was a repose to a fan question, Geisler said "It hasn't resurfaced because I was burned out after Road Rash 3.” He continued "But I'm ready to do another one now. I miss playing it too. If there is enough interest, I'll Kickstart on it."
This will come as great news to fans of the dormant series, however, EA still owns the rights, so the arrival of the game will also depend on the publisher's willingness to relinquish the name. As EA has shown no interest in developing the series, this may not be a biggie. That said, EA also owns the rights to games such as System Shock 2, and despite doing nothing with the license, has yet to release it, so we'll have to cross our fingers for Road Rash's future.
