Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII trailer

The next Final Fantasy XIII instalment, Lightning Returns has a trailer and release window…

If you’re one the die hard Final Fantasy fans that hasn’t switched off from the series after its move away from classic open world gameplay with secrets and varied environments, then this new trailer for the next game in the Final Fantasy XIII mould should be right up your alley.

Lighting Returns is the subtitle of the new game, and as it suggests, sees Final Fantasy XIII's main protagonist, erm… returning. The problem is, she’s returned just 13 days before the end of the world. A shame that.

Of course, being the powerful do-gooder that she is, she embarks on a quest to save the world, and on the way will have to battle a range of enemies and screen-filling bosses.

Doing away with the usual Final Fantasy party system, Lightning is to be the only playable character, but the game will still make use of FFXIII’s ATB battle system. This will be different, though, due to the solo character. Lighting will be more controllable than before, with the player able to quickly avoid attacks and customise her abilities and skills to a greater degree than before.

Events will be world-driven, and things will happen in the world, regardless of your presence in that location, or the time of day. Lighting’s acts can also affect the flow of time, and depending on your actions in the game, time may slow down, speed up or even reverse, which will be all-important given the 13 day deadline.

The game will include much more exploration, and the world, although limited to the city of Luxerion and its surrounding areas, will be open, and much more interactive than the two previous FFXIII games. The areas will also offer different challenges, with the city being more of an investigative affair, and the surrounding areas being more about combat and dungeons.

As the trailer below states at the end, the game is set to arrive this autumn on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
