EVE Online: a safe haven for Warcraft refugees

Bored of Warcraft? Try life on the frontier...

Published on May 14, 2007

Like many others, I was a Warcraft addict. I’ve poured more hours than I’d care to think about into the chores and trials of life in Aezeroth. Like many others though, I finally came to my senses and thought ‘What the Christ am I doing? I hate this game. I hate the grinding, the guild drama, the crippling of my social life. I hate all of it!’

One click of the ‘cancel subscription’ button and I was a free man.

The problem with all this is that I was now left, as are many recovering addicts, with nothing to do. Sure, I could go out in the sunshine, climb trees, play football and all the other things well adjusted young men do. But I’m a geek. A lack of a WoW subscription isn’t gonna change that.

It was time for a new time-sink.

At this point, I met a new friend. His name was EVE: Online. EVE made me wild promises. He said he had a huge game world, where all his players were on the same, single server. He promised me a totally free-form universe. No more of this ‘come heal Karazhan’ nonsense. I could be a pirate, I could be a bounty-hunter. Hell, I could even be a freelance goods transporter and act out all my Firefly fantasies.

He told me I would never have to grind for skills. I would just click on a ‘learn’ button and my character would carry on training for it while I was off doing other things. It would even train while I was offline.

Thing is… his promises all came true. I’m hooked. After the 14-day free trial period he so kindly gave me, I’ve just popped some cash into his pocket to play for another month.

So, if you’re bored of running around as a giant magical Cow, give EVE a try. It might just be up your street.

I’ll see you in the ‘Verse.

I need to know more, man! How much does it cost per month? Do you have to buy the software? What does EVE stand for?

Chris, you didn't mention this was invented in Iceland! I'm almost tempted now...

Sarah ought to plug that URL in as a link somewhere if we're going to plug these good folks.

price per month....errr.....kind of varies. mainly because there are so many ways to pay for it. there are game time cards ranging from a tenner to fifteen quid for a month. You can also buy these with in-game currency, so it's all a bit complicated. And no, the software is free. Check out http://www.eve-online.com for a bit more info and to download the client. there's also a 14 day free trial with no commitment. Anyone who plays and also has a somethingawful forum account can join our corp (internet spaceship guild), the greater goon (www.greatergoon.net), who are the world's most awesome, n00b-friendly (and offensive) corp in the game.

It's an opinion, not a plug. ;)
