After much speculation, British publisher Eidos has confirmed that work is well under way on a Doctor Who videogame. The game, of which the company is releasing very few details right now – although it’s promising to reveal more shortly – is going to be heading for the PC, Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS.
This does not fill us with great amounts of joy, and leads us to think that it may be a trading card game or something of that ilk, as has been speculated before. After all, the Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS are skewed towards a younger demographic, and so a cutting edge adventure that’d test the graphical prowess of modern day games consoles doesn’t look like it’s on the cards.
We reserve judgement until we see more – or even something concrete – on the game, but for now we know that it’s coming, and that the release is apparently going to be quite soon.
Let’s hope it’s better than previous attempts at Doctor Who computer games – who else out there remembers BBC Multimedia’s horrible Destiny of the Doctors? Or what about Dalek Attack on the Spectrum? Maybe Doctor Who and the Mines of Terror, from ’85? Heck, there were even two BBC Micro games in the first half of the 80s – Doctor Who: The First Adventure and Doctor Who and the Warlord.
It’s fair to say, though, that none of those set the world alight, and in the same way that, for instance, Judge Dredd is still waiting for a game that properly utilises the potential of the licence, the definitive Doctor Who game could yet be some way off. Unless Eidos surprises us…
