According to UK industry trade magazine MCV, Nintendo is finally to confirm the latest version of its all-conquering handheld console, the Nintendo DS. An announcement is expected from the firm imminently.

As to what the new DS will be? Details are still fuzzy, but MCV reports that the updated unit is likely to include an in-built camera and an MP3 player too. Further speculation suggests improved wireless functionality, although any attempt to get confirmation has been met with a firm ‘no comment’.

Nintendo, of course, kept its Game Boy and Game Boy Advance lines going for many years by constantly refreshing and updating the hardware, and it’d be the second time it’s altered the DS, after the launch of the DS Lite several years’ back. It’s also likely to give Nintendo a salvo against the PSP, which has been enjoying success in Japan, and itself has benefited from a refresh.

It’s believed that a new DS would be available before Christmas, although whether that’s just in Japan for now clearly remains to be confirmed. We’ll keep you posted…
