Comic book writer Harvey Pekar has died, it's been confirmed, at the age of 70. He had been suffering from many problems, including prostate cancer, depression and asthma, although the exact cause of death has yet to be determined.
Pekar was the man behind the American Splendor comics, which since 1976 had been chronicling his daily battles with life.
His life and comic book work also inspired the wonderful biopic American Splendor, in which he starred as himself alongside Paul Giamatti, who was also playing him. It's one of the most brilliant and unusual biopics you're ever likely to see, and at the news of Pekar's death, it's more strongly recommended than ever.
Pekar is survived by his wife, Joyce Brabner.
