Watchmen 2 news round-up

Could we be seeing Watchmen spin-offs and another movie?

Published on Feb 5, 2010

The Internet, you may have noticed, appears to have become awash with word of Watchmen 2 over the past day or so, courtesy primarily of a post from Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool. Johnston has uncovered plans to develop a sequel project to the Watchmen comic book, which is the best-selling DC publication ever.

The idea, reports the site, of a Watchmen 2 had been held off by previous DC head honcho Paul Levitz, who believed it would be against the wishes of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. But Levitz is no longer in that role, and thus the belief is that Dan DiDio, senior vice-president/executive editor at DC, is now investigating the idea of Watchmen spin-offs, with a prequel mini-series in the offing.

Contractually, it seems that Gibbons and Moore have to be offered the project first, but if they turn it down, it can still go ahead. Soundings, Johnston reports, have been taken from those who may be interested in taking on the challenge.

The full story, which goes into some detail, can be found here, and right now, the world seems to be awaiting some kind of formal response from all concerned.

One offshoot of the story, though, is that some speculated another movie may then be in the offing. That, however, won't be happening. Over at Deadline Hollywood, Nikki Finke quotes an insider as saying "There is no truth to anything related to a movie sequel. Not a chance by a longshot."

The ultimately disappointing grosses from the Watchmen movie, considering how much it cost to make, outright killed any chance of that happening. And that's before the legal spat between Fox and Warner Bros, which, no doubt, covers potential sequels, is taken into account.

We await further developments with trepidation. And kudos, of course, to Bleeding Cool for breaking the story.

Not cool. Hiring new writers for movies is one thing (it's such a collaborative process writing a screenplay that authorial ownership is much smaller than books etc...). But just commissioning a sequel to Watchmen without Alan Moore? I for one would never buy that.

Wouldn't it be awesome in the most WTF?!!!11?!!! move if Moore agrees to write it and comes up with something awesome. However all the saem I don't really rate any of the things Moore has written recently, there's been a lot of very good writers that could do a 90s commercialism gone wrong Watchmen2.

This is the worst idea to come down the chute in a long time. DC must be desperate! It's 99% certain that Alan Moore wouldn't be involved, given his complete hatred of that company. Even if by some miracle he was involved, he wrapped the original story up so nicely that any sequel would be an anticlimax. There would be little point in doing a prequel either, as the original storyline already covered the back-stories of all the major characters in great detail. Didn't the same thing recently happen with Frank Miller's Dark Night Returns? I haven't read that sequel myself, but read a review that said it was poor. One possibility would be to do an open-ended series that covered the day-to-day expoits of the heroes before the events of Watchmen. On the other hand, anyone who wanted those stories could just pick up the original 1960s Charlton comics that the characters were based on. . . The only halfway decent outcome would be if Dave Gibbons drew it and Neil Gaiman wrote it.

Unless you're referring to All Star Batman and Robin...which is also shit. But at least there's Jim Lee's stunning artwork to distract you

It's well known that artists work increases in value after they die. I suspect the bigwigs are trying to increase the value of their current portfolio by causing Moore to die through apoplexy.

Uwe Boll has more chance of winning an Oscar then DC have of persuading Alan Moore to write a sequel.

If Dan DiDio with his ridiculous name even DREAMS of going forward with this, he better wake up and apologize.

There's obviously an argument that Moore himself has revised or rewritten other people's characters countless times... but fuck me, is nothing scared?
