The Sarah of the Dead column: geeky pumpkins
Sarah Dobbs
Halloween's technically over now. But Sarah's not letting go that easily...

Let's talk Halloween, then. I didn't do much last night - watched a couple of episodes of Eerie, Indiana and handed out sweets to a seemingly endless parade of trick-or-treaters - but I did go to a party a couple of weeks ago. And very good it was, too. Just about the only thing I feel like I've missed out on is carving pumpkins.
I'm actually rubbish at it, but that doesn't stop me wanting to try. Luckily, I'm quite good at using Google Image Search to find people who are much better at carving pumpkins than I am, so let's all marvel at their skill instead:

Yoda is possibly the most obvious geek icon to carve onto a pumpkin, but... it looks awesome! It's really detailed, with some quite delicate cuts, and it really looks like Yoda. You don't even have to squint. It's wicked.

And this is even more awesome.

Yeah, I can't even figure out how this works. It's Aeryn Sun, from Farscape, and ... it's mindblowingly good. I'm going to find some less intricate ones now, to make myself feel better...

Hee, hee. I love the concept of this. It's ace.

As is this. I saw some Firefox pumpkins on my travels, too, but this little Linux Tux pumpkin was too cute not to include.

Time to get some superhero action up in here. This is the Green Lantern symbol. Quite appropriate, actually, only this is an orange lantern. Heh. (Sorry.)

And we're back in the realm of the amazing, again. This is a Cylon pumpkin, and it's wicked.

And this is a Dalek. Complete with extra bits to make it all the more Daleky. It's... kind of scary, actually.
So... are you inspired yet? Or are you just as cack-handed as me when it comes to pumpkin art?
