Transformers hits. We think.

The first day's takings are in, and Transformers is a hit. Or is it?

And so the opening numbers for Transformers at the US box office are in, and it's a record Tuesday opening. Its single day take was $27.45m, a sizeable sum that's generated lots of news content about how they've conquered the box office.

But in the modern day world of the hyper-expensive blockbuster, is that enough? For Tranformers' single day opening is 20th in the list of other day one totals. Spider-man 3 set the record earlier this year at $59m, and films such as the Harry Potters, The Da Vinci Code and even this year's 300 lie above it. Even factoring in the $8m it pulled in off previews, it seems to hint at a hint in the region of $150m for the film, and that might not be enough to cover its costs.

Granted, overseas, merchandise and DVD takings will take it long into profit, but you'd imagine it's a $200-250m US take that would have been the more tangible target, and at the moment, that kind of number relies on Transformers holding its audience. The fact that it's the July 4th week in the States should help it, though, even if fandom movies have been collapsing into the second weeks of their run.

We'll have a look at the weekly numbers when they come in next Monday. But for now, the jury is out. And who'd have thought that with $30m in the bank after a day?
