George Lucas: Spider-Man 3 "is silly"

And you thought Spider-Man 3's Star Wars Day release was irrelevant...

George Lucas has been opening his big mouth again - never a good idea, really, is it? Anyway, he's passed judgement on the new Spider-Man movie, and basically, he's not impressed. Specifically:

"It's silly. It's a silly movie. There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?"

I'm holding back my knee-jerk reaction, because-- well, because it's a knee-jerk reaction. But right now, I'm thinking Revenge of the Sith and Spider-Man 3 are comparable movies on any number of levels. (Not least because I've spent an awful lot of time and effort defending both of them.) They're both big action movies let down by trying to do too much, and trying to shoehorn in too much emotional nonsense.

And the love stories in both are utter bobbins. And Darth Vader and Spider-Man are both awesome, but both have whiny emo boy-in-need-of-a-haircut counterparts. I could go on.

But at the end of the day, they're both highly enjoyable summer blockbusters, and Lucas slagging off Spider-Man is just, to borrow his own word, silly, if you ask me.

Though not as silly as the news that there are going to be two made-for-TV Star Wars movies made in the near future, neither of which will feature anyone with the surname Skywalker. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the living room...

This a man responsible for among other things, The Star Wars Christmas Special, Ja Ja Binks, Jabba's 'muppets', the Ewoks and 'Watch your mouth, kid, or you're going to find yourself floating home'... Perhaps unlimited wealth gives you a whole new perspective? Or not...
